Dr Strangelove (stage play)

Anyone else seen it? I went in completely open minded, and whilst I didn't hate it I also didn't feel, well..anything really. Coogan does a good job, some of the supporting cast are excellent but a lot of the laughs were because Coogan had just done a quick change while someone else was standing in for him. It was all a bit self aware for me and I was flummoxed by the standing ovation at the end. I'm glad it's a limited run because I saw it in its first week and Coogan already looked tired. There's little sign of Iannucci until the ending and the contemporary jokes that have been put in seem gratuitous. I got none of the dreamlike, surreality that I do from the film.

I was left wondering why they felt Dr Strangelove needed making into a stage show, when every bit of comedy advice contains the words 'why now?'

Or just why? Is Coogan's ego trying to outdo Sellers with his multi role playing? I'm guessing he's playing the same parts, not that I'm interested enough to go and see it.

Agree - ego trip, and I hope he doesn't think he's on a par with Sellers in any way. The film (one of my all time favourites) cannot be matched or improved - it was/is simply superb, and not just PS, but things like Slim Pickens, perfectly cast as the B-52 bomber captain, with him checking the contents of the survival kit tin 😂
