This Is Your Life

I decided to treat me and Master L to the Premium tier of YouTube, ergo - no adverts and the ability to download videos and watch them offline etc. Anyway, I've started watching old editions of 'This Is Your Life (TIYL) and they're absolutely great. I saw George Layton's the other day and Sue Johnson's yesterday. They're so cheesy. I might see whether I can find any 'Name That Tune' or 'Give Us A Clue' to really hit that 80s or 90s vintage TV vibe.

I watched the entire series of 'When the Boat Comes In' on YouTube Premium. On't big telly too so they were all a bit wider.
A superbly written drama from the 70's

Ooh thanks Stephen, I've never seen that but I do like a bit of Jimmy Bolam, plus I have a bit of a penchant for a Geordie or Mackem accent 😀

It's set in 1918/1919 just as the surviving soldiers are coming home from the terrible war.
Jack Ford(James Bolam) decides he is getting out from the dirt and poverty and plots his moves carefully.

Incidentally - he met his wife Susan Jameson on that set and they are still married.

That sounds like something I'd really enjoy. I honestly think that the older TV dramas are far superior to the crud they churn out these days. I must finish watching 'The Duchess of Duke Street' - I own the DVDs but I'm lazy and cannot be bothered to boot up the machine, plus a kind soul has uploaded the whole series. I mean, it's probably the fifth or so's viewing, but it's brilliant.

I'm so glad that JB is still married to SJ - I have a feeling that she was also in 'Grandpa in my Pocket' which was a great favourite of my son's when he was young. I must admit to getting Susan and Louise Jameson mixed up though!

As long as James Bolam doesn't.

Oh, I don't know - it might be his ultimate fantasy? Wasn't LJ one of Doctor Who's companions at one time and used to wear skimpy outfits?

She was also Bergerac's girlfriend.

Indeed, she was and what a whiny character she was too; plus, she was an estate agent. I liked her red XR3i, though. I had my first crush on John Nettles ... those blue eyes, that French accent when he answered the phone with "Bureau des estrangers."

I was rather enamoured by Philippa Vale myself.

So was my dad! I think that Ms Goddard successfully sued one of the red tops for falsely accusing her of having an affair with Mr Nettles. She won. Wasn't she also in that absolute British classic 'Oh You Are Awful!'? I think that the director hired a stunt bottom though?

Oh, don't spoil it for me after all these years.

I was wrong - the buttocks were indeed Ms Goddard's own gluteals. I was delving into the IMDB pages yesterday and apparently it was the only nude scene she ever undertook during her career. The character of Phillippa Vale skinnydips during an episode of Bergerac, but there's a body double used. There was an excellent series on BBC4 years ago called 'The Magic of Sunday Night TV" or similar in which John Nettles stated that he chose to wear trousers during the various love scenes he was contracted to do. Apparently this was to save any embrassment for the actress because, well, if he didn't get excited she'd be offended and if he did, well, it's difficult to hide male tumesce in a form fitting pair of 80s Farahs.
