By electing a Conservative government a few years before.
That's very unfair, of course. The pandemic absolutely wasn't the government's fault. It would have happened anyway.
But it was handled very badly. Probably only Trump did a worse job of it than the Johnson government.
And Brexit. Everyone agrees that has severely weakened the economy. Why did we have the referendum again? Oh yes, because the Tories were scared of UKP.
And the disastrous Truss/Kwartang budget. "At last! A real Tory budget" (Daily Telegraph). Billions wasted in an economic crisis.
So yes. The recession is largely the Conservatives' fault.
