The Larkins (1958) Page 2

But the same name, Larkin? That must have been deliberate.

I was wondering that.
"Darling Buds of May" was published in 1958, funnily enough.
So I guess it must have been coincidence, because the literary version of The Larkin family would not have gained a reputation by then.
H E Bates must have been a bit pissed off, because there was a whole series of Larkins books featuring 'his' Larkins.

Not quite! Larkins, not Larkin.

zooo got into this very same confusion last night and I managed to find some specific dates: this TV sitcom began in September 1958, whilst The Darling Buds Of May was initially serialised in a newspaper, beginning in January 1958.

And to add to the confusion, the 2021 remake of The Darling Buds of May starring Bradley Walsh, is called The Larkins

Hard to believe that wasn't some sort of unconscious link.

I'd like to have seen the Larkin one - not sure it would have got past the censors, though...

I've just been doing a little researching further, and it turns out that the sitcom's writer, Fred Robinson, had been writing comedy plays about his Larkins family since about 1948.

So either Bates is a guilty chap, or - as the plays seem to have been more am-dram than popular productions - we're back to pure odd coincidence.

I blame H E Bates.
I had to study Fair Stood The Wind For France for O-Level.
Never forgiven him.

So it seems even those "in the know" are confused - I noticed that the thumbnail picture on my Virgin digi-box for the current repeat run of the B&W The Larkins, is of the Darling Buds of May/The Larkins. What a fiasco - I hope the knob end at ITV got the push for the suggestion of using "The Larkins" title for the DBoM remake.

Just started watching the box set that was bought for me for Christmas. Into the rotation it goes.

Into the second series, which is getting funnier. "Haul For One" about a football pools win was hysterical. ?
And in "Gift Horse Power", another very funny one - ITMA Sam Kydd (!) in a small part

A lovely sitcom. I hope people take to it.

Oh dear. It was hilarious, until they moved out of 66 Sycamore Street, where they were for the first four series, and then it went rapidly downhill when they opened a café/B&B for series 5 & 6, which barely raised a titter.

Shame, as I was really enjoying it up till then.

First ever example of "Jumping the Shark" maybe?

I actually really enjoyed both variants. The show changes a lot, it's essentially a sequel rather than the same thing, but still very funny and enjoyable IMO.
