The Chase tea time quiz show. Page 2

I watched a Chase outtakes episode yesterday and this was one of the questions:

King George III was the first monarch to hold an account with which bank?

A.) Coutts
B.) Clydesdale
C.) Co-op

The contestant chose Co-op.

Hmmm. Co-Op bank was established in 1872. George the Third died in 1820.
Wrong, but not a totally crazy answer.

It wasn't in the realm of impossibility for it to be Co-op without knowing the precise dates of when George died and when the bank was founded but with Coutts as an option it seemed daft to ignore that and guess with Co-op. I always watch The Chase and don't mind who the chaser is. It can be tense when the final game comes down to the final few seconds which happens a lot. Beat The Chasers is also a great format with plenty of laughs I never miss that show.

I gave up watching it many years ago, along with the aptly named Pointless - it's so predictable! The same old worn out jokes, the same old "just another day at the office, Brad" 😴 In fact, the same old shit all round.

I've not watched enough Pointless to understand the rules and I intend on keeping it that way. I tend to record The Chase and most quiz shows so I can fast forward which turns an hour episode in to 15 minutes. I can skip all the boring bits like when Bradley starts laughing at a double entendre which is so 80s to do on a quiz show and skip Chris Tarrant and his awkward telephone conversations with the phone a friend.

I had high hopes for the return of Deal Or No Deal which started a new series with Stephen Mulhern a few days ago but the reviews have panned it. I've been hoping it would return for the last few years so it was good news and I didn't even mind Stephen presenting because to be fair to him he's pretty good as a quiz show host but apparently the new format isn't the same as the Noel era.

I've been watching the new Deal or no Deal (recorded on series link). The only differences I can think of are the new presenter (and new banker apparently, not that we know who he is, or the old one was), and surprisingly in these cash-strapped times, the highest cash prize is now £100,000, whereas it used to be £250,000.

Neither are that bad, but both suffer from being on five times a week. If both were only on once a week (like Only Connect and University Challenge), I'd probably still watch them.

Totally agree, and yes I probably would give them another chance, though Armstrong patronising attitude would still get under my skin - Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I simply do not understand anyone binge watching something, too - when they show a new series and say, for example, "or you can watch the whole thing now on iplayer" - WHY!!

Yes, I do that with OC, as Victoria's "funny" bits are toe-curlingly embarrassing and just see if my name is in the closing credits, then I will go through it again (at high speed) to see which one of mine they used, as we get no indication - even if your question makes the cut, as there is no guarantee they will be used in the current series.

I watched the first Deal or No Deal, and Mulhern is fine with me, but I won't be watching it again.

The motorbike is now away for the winter so got to pass the time somehow ;)

Also some of us have a shockingly poor memory - when episode 2 comes around we've forgotten what happened in ep 1 :(

There is only one rule in Pointless. Score the lowest you can

Why people give up because of the "jokes" I don't understand. It's to keep my (senile) mind active.

Certainly, as far as Pointless is concerned, rather than keep repeating old episodes, and relatively recent ones at that (next Monday's episode, for example, has already been shown twice only last year - in January 2022 & September 2022), it would be far better if they gave it a break and replaced it with a different programme. Say three months on, three months off. Like Countdown used to be, alternating with 15 to 1.

I've caught up with them now and good to see the only change is the jackpot but the audience seem much younger and part of the charm of the old show was most of the audience were pensioners like the Bullseye crowd. I had forgotten how annoying it is waiting in silence while the banker talks to the host and they need to something about that or ratings will plummet. Wrong choice of presenter and just seems like they have picked him because he's the go-to presenter these days instead of picking someone who fits and has more chance of securing loyal viewers giving it some longevity. Stephen Mulhern doesn't have wide appeal for the 4pm weekday viewer so I can't see it lasting long. It also seems to more sentimental now and it's only a matter of time before Stephen says the infuriating "what would £xxxx mean to you and your family?" Noel tended to steer clear of all that jazz.

One aspect I like about the show is rooting for the player if they seem nice and hoping they fail miserably if they don't seem likable :D I was hoping the copper would get a nice win and he was foolish to deal when he did. I don't know how to work the odds out but with what was still available and considering he and his wife both work as police officers so they have a good income I bet the odds were in his favour to carry on.

It must be an expensive show to produce when they accommodate most if not all of the contestants in a hotel every night and pay a voice actor to be the banker and presumably at least one egghead who calculates the banker's offer each round. Noel impersonating the banker in the style of Mr. Monopoly was one of the things I loved to hate.

Following her appearance on Have I got News For You I decided to search out Maisie Adams' Chase attempt. I knew nothing about it before tonight.

I love her and think her blonde hair tonight looked really good but oh dear. The Chase in 2016. You could see she was a great character but her general knowledge was somewhat lacking.
