I think the Proms should be whatever it wants to be.
People can either choose to go, or not.
Personally I think "Land of Hope and Glory" is a rotten tune, but love "Jerusalem" and always shed a tear at "Nimrod".
And people can wave whatever flag they like.
People with EU and LGBQ flags waving them through "Rule Brittania" is only upsetting to people who would rather those people wren't represented.
And let's be honest, having all those bright, young hopeful flag-wavers at the front is better than the terrible old hoorays we used to get.

I listened to the Rufus Wainwright ones on Radio 3, sad they weren't filmed though.
I only went one this year, Walton Violin concerto and Sibelius first symphony. It started with the premiere of a very strange piece called Kafka's Earplugs. When it finished, someone in the audience shouted: "What a load of rubbish!" 😂
My sister and brother in law were lucky enough to sit in the BBC box for one prom, as they're friends of the radio 3 presenter. They weren't allowed to talk or clap!

It may sound like sacrilege but I've always liked the idea of Jerusalem being our National Anthem instead.
I don't dislike 'God Save The King/Queen' (in fact I've sung along a bunch of times when others are) but it always felt to me that Jerusalem would fit better, it's about the people and country instead of being all about our monarch. Obviously not opposed to the actual anthem we have, I just have a different preference!
Anyway, I'd love to go to the last night of the proms one day, seems like such an experience and one of those cultural landmarks of each year! And glad there's people my age and younger than myself still enthusiastic about it.
Regarding the flag waving, those people were still there to enjoy the music and atmosphere it seems, and flags have always been waved at the Proms, doesn't matter if some of them are different to the Union Jack.

100% agree.
Other people's anthems - as well as being better musically - celebrate the people, the country and it's destiny, rather than begging to be ruled over.
Forward rather than backward looking.
