Proms 2023

A marvellous season all round, the last night a brilliant and varied feast of music. But why oh why Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory? Surely it's time to knock this tired and clichéd triumphalism on the head! And less Union Jacks, please!

Jerusalem still gives me goosebumps, though...

And NOT God Save the King!!!

How about the Russian national anthem "Patrioticheskaya Pesnya"?

And NOT God Save the King!!!

F**k me, let's all get our red flags out with the hammer and sickle on, comrade

EDIT: The cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason was superb!
Oh shit, I shouldn't have mentioned him as he was picked to play at a Royal Wedding

Don't be silly, Herc! Both the Soviet and British empires are dead and gone, both despicable.

One of them is trying hard for Empire Version 2.0.

♪ Britain will never never never rejoin the EU.......

...🎼 Brexit never ever shall be anything but a shitshow based on lies, voted for by gullible fools! 🎼

They should 've been compulsory, but wtf were all those EU flags doing there? If I was there I'd have started a punch up. On a more didactic note, surely without a sense of national pride you become a nation without identity, having no sense of belonging, no sense of purpose or direction?

And what about Vive La France and all the other still patriotic EU countries, will they have to stop their Bastille Days and all the other pomp? I give you the essence of the problem with the all empowering EU, it aims to neuter the members' own national sovereignty, and that erodes their identity, challenges their national pride, and that's why it's doom to fail. The crumbling has begun.

I wasn't talking about empires - you can't keep a good song down, as you found with Jerusalem, and for such a rabid anti-monarchist, I'm surprised at you living in two countries that have a royal family - now who is looking silly? And perverse.

If you want despicable empires to knock, look no further than the EU.

Is this not in reaction to the new European empire that's crept right up to their doorstep? One day someone might question the diplomacy of putting a whole continent into a political and economic powerhouse when your neighbours aren't doing so well.

It seems my innocent post has been a red rag to a bull! 😈
I hope you all stood and saluted when the national anthem played...

Innocent?

If you had left your prejudices on the doorstep, you would not have received adverse reactions.

When I saw the thread, you had created, I thought you were commenting on The Proms, not making political statements.

As songs, I do think Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory are a bit dreary I'd like something jauntier, like the theme from The Munsters, but with patriotic words added obviously.

Did anyone go to any of the Proms this year? The Northern Soul one looked brilliant on TV.

I'm not surprised at Alfred's bizarre reply - it is a comedy forum, after all!
