"I was pissing by the doorway, when I heard a shat" has to be one of the great sitcom lines

Not sure lovers of realism would have been glued to 'Allo, 'Allo

Note I didn't say lovers of it, I meant a broad swathe (not sure it was a majority yet) of TV viewers who were just used to and preferred shows being played as real or natural without blowing their theatrical cover, such as The Good Life you mentioned.

The acceptance of daft and silly sitcoms with unrealistic plotlines had seen several sitcoms get very high ratings and long runs before 'Allo 'Allo!, such as the creators' previous, AYBS?.

It was never really a huge issue with viewers until things like The Royle Family and The Office started this move away from studio audience made sitcoms to the evolution of comedy drama semi soaps that cram the sitcom slot now.

Allo Allo was arguably anti-sitcom at times since it had an ongoing continuing plot rather than the stand alone ones of many traditional sitcoms. You could even say it was a bit soapy in that regard.

"The RAF bummers are still farting for Britain "

Ingmar Bergman argues he did it first in Monica. Always cheers me up, ole Ingmar.

AA hardly gets a mention now or a mainstream showing because this interruption of realism is so out of fashion.

I suspect that the reason 'Allo 'Allo! doesn't make it on to BBC1 (if that's what you mean by "mainstream") any more is for reasons other than "the interruption of realism".

However, it has had several repeat runs on Drama & Yesterday, which are both on Freeview, which is probably about as "mainstream" as it gets nowadays.

Was it ever an issue with viewers - huge or otherwise?
I thought it was part of the charm of the show, and why people liked it (me included)
They didn't go off it because they watched The Royle Family and saw the light about narrative comedy.
In fact I'd be surprised if there was much of a cross over audience at all - especially as Allo Allo had been off air for six years when The Royle Family hit our screens.
I think you sometimes let your personal vendetta get in the way of sensible analysis, old thing.

Allo Allo went on twice as long as the war, didn't it? And it did get shockingly poor towards the end.

Wha? The war lasted approx. over 1800 days - I don't think there were 1800 episodes of AA

The BBC are probably wary if it being extremely Politically incorrect.

And how could I forget Up The Elephant and Round The Castle? Easily and with the greatest of pleasure. It was total and utter shit.
