1950...............

Resurgence of both colour adverts and tinned vegetables, and Farrows are still going today

Two slogans from old tv ads spring to mind:

You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent... and

Sorry, mate, you're too late, the best peas went to Farrow's...

😁 I remember the Pepsodent one - one of the early TV ads.

Yes, that does seem an odd thing to advertise, but I see it's not a company, but an association presumably promoting its use post war, and that's the sort of thing I find interesting in early advertising - gives you a flavour of what was trending then.

My Dad worked for Blue Circle (which I think included the Cement Marketing Board) for about 35 years.

I remember you saying he was a hard case.

What are "processed" peas?

What are "processed" peas?

😁 I seem to remember you had a similar query about Mushy Peas awhile back, when I said I liked them with fish and chips.

Basically, processed peas are reconstituted dried peas, if you have those in The States (?) I think it's a war-time food stuff, as I remember my Mother buying dried peas and soaking them overnight in water with some sort of large white tablet. The flavour must have been popular, so someone decided to do the process beforehand (to save people soaking them) and sticking them in cans.
They do have a distinctive flavour, which I like.

Black peas with vinegar is delicious. Not had them in years but used to buy them from the pasty shop in Bolton. Perfect grub to warm up in winter.

An old favourite is the Terry's Chocolate Orange advert from the 80s with the Indiana Jones theme and the Shake n Vac. And Ariston and on and on...

1954............. Competition was fierce for washing powders post war and claims were always way over the top

1955.........Harmonica playing was a big thing in the 50s, and here we can see Ronald Chesney - not only was he was the leading British professional harmonica player at that time, but also went on the write "On the Buses" and "The Rag Trade" with his writing partner Ronald Wolfe
