This is one of the cleverest saucy seaside postcards I've ever seen. Certainly saucy but, unlike so many saucy cards, it doesn't demean any of the characters depicted or anyone else as far as I can see. It's beautifully illustrated and the joke itself wouldn't be out of place in a play by Oscar Wilde. Well done, Mr McGill.

Agreed, that's an elegant joke, a wee bit Dorothy Parker in tone.

Image

I'm not sure what Mr McGill's going for with this card but a man looking at girls on the beach with his binoculars is a pretty weak joke in the world of saucy seaside postcards where mega bawdiness and even full-on sexual assaults are commonplace.

Maybe the listening woman thinks 'too' at the end of the sentence means he has his binoculars out but he also has something else out?

Who knows?.

I wouldn't fancy a doughnut made like that, would you? No, you wouldn't so please don't try it at home. The man in the postcard isn't a real chef. He's just a cartoon character and he knows nothing about doughnuts or anything else. If he were a real chef and he wanted to make doughnuts, he'd probably use something like this:

Or, if he wanted to make lots and lots in one batch, he might use something like this:

That's how real doughnuts are made so please make your own in a similarly efficient and professional way. They'll be delicious.

"BCG forums - for knob gags and so much more."

Original postcard.

Alternative version with new dialogue. It's an homage to the 1960s.
