Gert And Daisy Clean Up (1942)

The only thing remarkable about this film is the fact it was lost and this, on TPTV, was put together by some film editors from two tatty copies of it. One on 35mm highly flammable nitrate film, which was transferred to a more stable film stock by specialists and one a 16mm copy found in, I think, Australia. Both were incomplete and they had to watch the two together over and over again, until they could see which bits were worth saving.

And I have to say, they did a brilliant job.

However, as far as the film is concerned, I am AGAIN (I reviewed their film "It's In The Bag" 1944 in 2020) , at a complete loss as to why this is funny. OK, the humour was different then, but surely there was no one in the war who laughed at this childish humour and pranks. I'll take others of the period with a pinch of salt, but this is just dire!

Absolutely no one of note in the film about them exposing black-marketeers in the war, who on this occasion were peddling tins of pineapple chunks (a luxury then) stolen from a cargo ship. Throw in a mix of some patriotic songs and propaganda about saving salvage (newspapers etc.) and there you have it.

1/10

THANKS! That was to be one of my future questions in the BCG Quiz

OK. Post deleted. Before anyone read it.

Thank you, and I'm glad I hadn't gone far as I quoted your post and to delete mine.

At least you will know the answer to that one when it comes up, but I don't think it will be until 2024 - seriously!

I have 30 quizzes on my spreadsheet, and that is in my unfinished Quiz 31, which Mark says it won't appear until then - I hope you have a good memory. ?

Honestly, if your quiz questions are answered on our site, that's surely a good thing?

Anyway.

I've a soft spot for these cheaply produced morale-raising wartime films. I find them really interesting - certainly some funnier than others (and some not at all) - and this is a particular curio. I hope the rest is located one day, as Gert and Daisy were a hugely popular and important double act.

Not quite sure what you mean, there.

Facts being spread. Knowledge that people might know, and that can be pointed to as evidence. And so on.

I see what you are getting at (I think), but surely, just someone saying such and such on your forum, doesn't make it so. You still need concrete evidence from a reliable source such as say the Radio Times, or one of the better broadsheets (that were) or Britannica or the Beeb, but even they can get it wrong.

I think the only way you can be 100% sure of something is if you see a film or recording of the event/person.

Perhaps. Yet I still don't see it can be a negative to a quiz (especially one potentially so far in the future) to have the information around. Highly unlikely someone will remember it even if it's quite recent.

Hmm, not sure if I agree entirely.

Say Billy didn't delete his post with the answer to my question, which appears on this site in 2024 and someone did a search of this film purely as research on the subject, then the answer (much to their pleasant surprise) would be for all to see in this thread.

So? It's not like the question is the exclusive owner of the information.

If people want to cheat and look up answers when the quiz comes out, that's a different matter entirely. If the answers to questions can be found from being well-read and/or well-watched, that's great. We want some questions to be trickier than others, but not effectively impossible!

Oh, I can make them impossible! ?

But, apart from that, we seem to be in a car with you driving and going dead straight, ignoring my suggestions for some of the side turnings - figure that one out!

Anyway, I think I see what you are getting at - you want knowledge/trivia, call it what you will on the web site to expand the references for anybody.

BUT you surely wouldn't allow that to be used as a reference to back up a question.
Then, may I suggest, you add this bit of trivia to Gert and Daisy in your database, then I can refer to it in my question, and we're all happy. ?

And while you are at it, you can add this film to it, which isn't there! You only have the other two they were in. ?

Yes. Anything on the website is welcome. It should not be secondary consideration to quiz questions.

Potentially! Depends what form it takes.

Well I might have been able to, but you had it deleted... ?

Looks like we've not credited the film yet. I'll move it up my list.

I was merely pointing out who their brother was for anybody who wasn't already aware. I wasn't expecting a kind of... ...

Ah! Of course. Yeah, I think that's very common knowledge amongst anyone who knows the pair at all.
