A radically redesigned Parliament

In view of the mess that the current Parliamentary System has created, I thought it might be nice to have discussion here with proposals for a radically altered Parliamentary system. (recognizing that it might need an Oliver Cromwell to implement them ).

So here are my first suggestions:

1. To avoid rich-man/poor-man/bribery bias, every person on becoming a Member of Parliament (MP) shall acknowledge that all income from shares & companies or organizations for the MP and his/her spouse shall be paid into the treasury funds for the duration of their time as an MP. This shall include Dividends, Capital-profit and Director's salaries and consultancy fees. If an MP was formerly a Managing Director s/he shall hand-over the post to another person for the duration of his/her time at Parliament. MPs will have a fixed salary and be permitted to claim expenses for items directly related to their work as an MP but these shall be closely monitored.

2. At every election for a Member of Parliament, at least one extra candidate will be chosen at random from the constituency, added to those that put themselves forward. If a random candidate is elected s/he must serve a full 4 years as an MP, and will receive an MP's salary and MP's pension on retirement from the post.

3. To ensure that the NHS is treated fairly, every MP on taking up their post shall cancel all Private-Health Insurance schemes and shall rely on the NHS for medical aid.

4. The Parliamentary Party system shall be abolished, each candidate for an MP post shall publish their individual manifestos, during the hustings. The entire body of MPs shall elect the Prime Minister (PM) and Speaker. The PM shall then select the members of the Cabinet and other Ministers from the entire body of MPs.

5. If any MP resigns as an MP there shall be a full election at the relevant constituency.

Do it like Jury Service. Pick someone from a constituency at random. Anyone who wants to go into politics shouldn't be allowed to.

Abolish Parliament and return to direct absolute monarchical rule. Easy.

Brilliant idea!

Halls of residences for MPs and Lords staying in London that are 4 star equivalent.
No second Homes
MPs to be PAYE who clock in either at Parliament or their constituency.
MP's expenses to be capped at £20,000
A complete abolition of the monarchy and the House of Lords
An elected upper chamber to replace it.

I have been saying this for years.
Include loads of meeting rooms - think of the work that could get done.

We pay MPs very little for what we ask them to do. That is the root of most problems. And it'd be so incredibly toxic to start addressing that it will not get sorted any time remotely soon.

If you advertised a low paying job like that, you would have a queue 200 miles long and almost everyone on here would be in it.
Apart from the ones who want to ruled by a king and who also no doubt like stories that are read out loud by Brian Cant.

Irrelevant. It might sound attractive but it's not realistic for the job in hand.

How is that irrelevant I would take that job on drop of a hat .
Ask anyone working a 12 hour shift in Amazon who is pissing in a bottle on 10 quid an hour and they would as well.
At the end of the day its a great job thats highly paid and has amazing perks and there has never in the history of Parliament been a shortage of people prepared to do the job. What does that tell you.

Wanting to do the job is not the issue.

People of quality getting into the role and not being corrupt or otherwise less than entirely honest is the problem.

If you pay sufficiently to perform the necessary duties, you don't get them topping up their wages with expenses claims, dodgy deals and the rest.

How does that apply to say Sunnak?
He has the money what he wants is the power.

And he's clearly not one of the worst members of the house.

I say that as someone who dislikes him quite a lot.

They should all get the same and it should be comparable to a manager level wage in industry.
They require no relevant degree in their field, they merely follow work set out by civil servants.
They get a Janet & John at the front of their briefs and the likes of Johnson couldn't even keep up with that.
I bet 90% of the people on here could do the job and do it well and if every MP lives in the constituency they represent their carbon footprint as well as their expenses would be minimal.
