You're right. It's not so subtle. I think the original card was 'spot on' for the audience of its day and I think my alternative might have been popular a couple of decades later.

My alternative isn't intended as an improvement It's just a variation on a theme.

Nope, I think you got that right.

cow's for an item/expression belonging to a single cow
cows' for an item/expression from multiple cows
cows's --- wrong?

I did see that the other day on some TV news (not cows's, but can't remember what now), and thought to myself, that doesn't look right.

Nothing wrong with the apostrophe in He's which is what I thought you meant.

It's like being back in the second form doing English Language.Not that we had a saucy postcard to work from unfortunately.
