You're right. It's not so subtle. I think the original card was 'spot on' for the audience of its day and I think my alternative might have been popular a couple of decades later.
My alternative isn't intended as an improvement It's just a variation on a theme.

cows' for an item/expression from multiple cows

Nothing wrong with the apostrophe in He's which is what I thought you meant.
It's like being back in the second form doing English Language.Not that we had a saucy postcard to work from unfortunately.
