Yes, many years ago, after reading Bob Monkhouse's biog., I knew his address at Claridge's (his farmhouse home) so wrote and told him how much I had enjoyed it (he was criticised at the time for some of his revelations relating to Frankie Howerd).
Amazingly (I thought) he wrote back to me with a hand written letter to thank me, so feeling now that we were great buddies I naively sent him some of my jokes (I was into writing comedy then); BUT he sent my list back with again a polite note thanking me and saying something along the lines that he hadn't read the list for professional reasons (fear of it popping up in his act?) as he only used his own material, which was fair enough - after all, who the f**k was I?
But the experience gave me an even greater appreciation of the man, after all he took the time to write to little old me.
