I have to agree with Stephen on this, those jokes were personal. Some people call it 'Roasting' and think you should laugh along. I could do that if I had to but I'd be hating it. But if they switch from you to your wife, then you put them on their arse, everyone knows that rule especially the one on their arse.
I read the news today oh boy! Page 2,372
When Trump was having the debates against Hilary Clinton and insulting her ( Goes into Kevin Keegan Voice ) I would have loved it I would have loved it if Bill had come up on stage and punched Trump in the face
Well, he has apologised now because he was in the wrong. You can defend someone's honour without resorting to violence. In the words of Winston Churchill, "Jaw, jaw is better than slap, slap."
But it was quite funny that he laughed at the joke at first, then saw how grim his wife looked and decided to have a hissy fit. Kind of undercut the whole defending her honour argument.
How does it undercut it?
He was laughing then saw she was hurt. That changes things immediately. (as it did)
I'd hope some of you had the balls to that in a similar situation. A leaflet campaign doesn't cut it.
Would he have hit a white comedian? It seems doubtful. Would a white man have hit the black comedian? Seems doubtful. So why did he feel it okay to hit a fellow person of colour? I fear his actions will lead to some unsavoury accusations, debates etc. He'll probably get some serious stick from black figureheads for letting himself do it, and have to do some serious penance or grovelling. Take away colour or race, there'd be more agreement for what he did but it would be hard to take that aspect away here, imo. And would he have done it at a much earlier stage in his career (less financially secure) is another question.

All a storm in a teacup, or should that be cup of joe, so I was taking little notice, but did hear some news commentator say "Was it racist?"............Wha? How does that come into the equation - confused.com ?
Well it doesn't do BLM's campaign much good if a very public figure of colour decides to whack another in a very public arena.

You always have to insult people and make things personal, Goodlad. It's not a pleasant trait.
Personally I think it takes more balls to show restraint and control yourself. Violence is not the only way to defend someone's honour. Prisons are full of idiots who see sleights and disrespect in every action and use it as an excuse to kick off.
I can see your point Chip , its valid. But its based on the ideal world not the real one. I do not advocate violence but I have a daughter sisters and a wife and I have seen how cruel and cold women are to each other and they would rather pick another women to death.
My daughter had this at school and it was appalling. Her mum was crying every night and the teachers were saying 'We are doing all we can' but it got worse. In the end I went to see the main girls dad and he thought he was Johhny Rock just because I apologised for being up his path.
So I told him straight that if he didn't stop his kid I was would be back and we could go over on the field and sort it out between ourselves . Guess what the bullying stopped.
I would love to live in a world where people are a lot nicer to each other I truly would. But the reality is that some people only understand the same thing that they dish out.
Putin is a case in point, do you seriously think he can be made to stop because its the right thing to do?
I'm still not entirely convinced that the whole thing wasn't a staged stunt to draw viewers to an awards ceremony that has been tanking in the ratings year after year. Surely there was plenty of security on hand to take care of an unwanted stage crasher. That said:
Everyone involved in the controversy was a public figure involved in a very public event that features occasionally snarky commentary from a host who is paid handsomely to do so. The "victim" is a rich and famous woman who is obviously comfortable with her somewhat unusual haircut; she could have worn a wig had she felt that self-conscious. Half of the women (and some of the men) in the audience were probably wearing a hairpiece.
The joke wasn't even remotely mean-spirited. It referenced a well-known actress who also shaved her head. The fact that Will Smith laughed initially shows that his offense was feigned. If his wife took offense - and it's fine if she did - either she or her husband could have simply voiced their displeasure, and I'm sure that an apology would have been forthcoming. A simple "Let's have a talk after the show" would have sufficed. The overly dramatic display of aggression was uncalled for, and it only served to make Mr. Smith look bad.
To sum it up: It was a shitty display at a shitty ceremony for shitty people who work in a shitty industry

Sad, but true.
As ever, I feel worst for the people who do the real work, many of whose categories aren't even televised, being even more overshadowed by all the tantrums and tiaras.

Yeah, the average blockbuster has hundreds of names in the credits, but only the rich and famous make it to the ceremony. I'm sure I'd rather spend an evening with the people who do the electrical work and build the sets than the spoiled actors, directors, and studio moguls.
I see all Russian politicians have gone to the Donald Trump school of bullshit
Asked to comment on anything their dictatorship is doing in Ukraine - all lies, all fake news , never happened- all misinformation and part of propaganda by the west
It's absolutely pathetic !
What is it coming to these days
Son helps his elderly mum along at his dads memorial service and it's branded a disgrace online

What insult? A difference of opinion, that's all.
