There are two boxes in your account settings.
One sets the default for whether you want to subscribe or not when coming to a thread for the first time.
The other allows you to unsubscribe from everything in one go at the point you are on that form, and is not a setting that saves any long term effect itself.
To un/subscribe to a thread, use the boxes on the reply forms or the blue subscription button at the top of the thread view page.
Thank you - I'm sure I've unchecked everything on my settings, but didn't notice the blue bar top left header of the thread, so have (de)activated the ones I was having a problem with, and we'll see how we go from there ?

As I explained elsewhere, this is liable to happen as a designed security precaution when your web browser updates. I know it can be a pain, but it's one of the ways we keep your data safe.
