Senior civil servants repeatedly warned Margaret Thatcher about the risks of giving Jimmy Savile a knighthood in the 1980s, one describing the broadcaster as a "strange and complex man".
Newly released documents show the ex-prime minister lobbied officials for recognition of Savile's charity work.
But mandarins rebuffed her requests, citing Savile's "manner of life" and fears he might exploit the honour.
Savile, a friend of the former PM, was ultimately knighted in 1990.

Goodwillie, signed for Raith Rovers. A convicted rapist.
NOT a joke.
Miliband on Sky agreeing with presenter that people shouldn't have their gas or electric cut off in the current crisis. How they intend to do that is beyond me? I wonder if he realises that when these companies were floated they needed to be able to attract 'Ethical Investors' Hence the companies introduced the Quantum Meter System. This gave the companies the ability to say to investors that they never 'Cut Off' a customer, they in fact....... 'Self Terminate'
I wonder how many people including the old, the poor and the infirm decide to 'Self Terminate' so that the beleaguered billionaire chancellor isn't forced to follow the French and Spanish and make the energy companies act?
"Et tu, Sunak?"
Bojo's loyal Chancellor jockeying for position with a well aimed stab in the back.
The wheels are coming off the wobbly shopping trolley
I don't fancy his chances to be honest , the underlying racism of the right will put Truss in the big Chair unless some how 'Matron' can be brought down from Scotland and use her big bosom to put the Eton boys in their place and give them erections at the same time. Tugendhat is the one to watch as he has real life experience via the British Army and he's the dark horse for me.
Truss is popular with the party - but not so much with MP's. Sunak has a pretty good profile with the voters and being Chancellor he plays well into the myth of financial prudence. She'll throw her hat into the ring, for sure (as will Tugendhat) and there'll be the usual self-indulgent bun fight. But the voters will be too busy burning their furniture for warmth to take any notice. Bring on the next millionaire for the working class to tug their forelock to.
I think Truss would be way to much of an admittance that they have nothing to offer, she is beyond lightweight. At the end of the day its a poisoned chalice anyway as Brexit is far from over or dare I say Dover. Northern Ireland alone is enough to have the yanks distance themselves even further from us. As it stands the next person to take the mantle does so on the understanding that there is not one jot of good news on the horizon and massive financial struggles for the working class and little comfort for the middle class.
We are reaching the point were it may be politically prudent for the deep pocketed long term backers of this mob to have Labour take over so that they can blame them instead of try to explain the unexplainable. The only stumbling block to that being that at this juncture the last thing they need is someone coming in and going over the books and seeing just what has gone on VIP lane wise.
Pick a straw any straw... and pull it. There's nothing there.
I like the line though 'let Labour take over and get blamed for all the shit. Another straw lol.
The fuel rise is nothing to do with Boris - it's world wide
Civil servants quitting is probably before they are pushed - by Boris.
The MSM have done a good job in indoctrinating those that want to hear all this.
Who are the Mainstream Media, Steve?
As far as I can see, different papers tell different stories - and from very different angles.
So, are the one's supporting Boris MSM as well?
Or is it just the left-wing ones?
I've never understood the term - it just seems to be the hollow war cry of conspiracy theorists.
Its a cop out that prevents someone from having to explain the unexplainable. When I see it I just move on as there is no reasoning to be had.
MSM is another of those idiotic phrases that have come from America and is slowly polluting our country.

I don't really mind where the phrase comes from - it's just it's use as a blanket term to squash other people's point-of-view I dislike.
What is telling is that - much like criticism of the BBC's political bias - you hear it as much from the far-right as the far-left.
If someone tells me a things too sweet, and someone else says it's too sour - to a centrist like me - it's probably just about right.

I agree with the rest of your post, it is a malignant phrase designed to dismiss anything you disagree with. But I also mind that it comes from America, because America has become an utterly ridiculous country in recent years and we seem to be following them down the rabbit hole.

Privatising energy
Another Tory master stroke
Is there anything they can't make worse or break completely?
Yawn....
