After Life Page 4

Tricky isn't.
I think it's because we span two different worlds of TV.
From a world where you watch 'what's on', to a world where you can watch whatever you like.
The danger is you only watch the kind of things you think you like - not be challenged by something out of your comfort zone.
My kids find it second nature, of course.

I love listening to The Comedy Slab podcast and they reviewed 'After Life' ages ago, but I'd have to re-listen to recall what they said but I don't like the series. OK - I'll say it, Gervais is incredibly over-rated at times and rather self-indulgent as PPs have already stated. I don't like the constant use of the C word and believe me, I'm no prude, I've lived in south London too long to be a snowflake. The episode which did for me was the one in which he paid a drug dealer/addict (cannot recall which) money to buy a shitload of drugs and OD on them. Why the hell is that funny? It's not even pathos.

I loved 'The Office', 'Extras' and some of 'Derek', although Gervais mugged the camera and really took the piss out of profoundly disabled people, an example of which is my lovely brother-in-law - he doesn't have the right of reply when people such as Gervais mock him cruelly. I did quite like Dougie and the drunken guy though so I can see humour there but the schmaltzy way that the residents behaved wasn't true - my mother-in-law was in a dementia home and there were some violent and angry types roaming the corridor, including one old guy who kept exposing himself - my Camden-born MIL said "it's not worth seeing anyway!" .

Gervais' stand-up is fully, especially his condemnation of Caitlin Jenner's driving prowess. He is laugh out loud hilarious at times.

Shall I give 'After Life' one more try? Mr C's paying for the Netflix account and all.

Not to play Devil's advocate (which means I'm going to play Devil's advocate), but the OD scene isn't really meant to be funny. And I have disabled relatives and I didn't mind the Office scenes as they were clearly laughing at people's hypocrisy rather than disability itself.
I find this series intriguing, moving and beautifully made. But not very funny.

I always wondered if you were an AI bot.

Don't you find you laugh one minute.... And the next..............?
I'll be glad when everyone shuts up about it. Plus, I can't believe someone just happened to have a camera on every second of his married life... A terminally ill woman spent all her final hours philosophising to a computer screen... And such a caustic, intelligent guy would keep seeing the world's worst psychologist and let someone he cares about, in his darkest hour, see him too.
Is there a law that everyone working with Ricky Gervais has to have a mole on their neck?

Yep but at least it's better then Extras

Sheeeesh..

I really liked Extras, especially the Les Dennis and Morgan Freeman eps. The only one I never got into was Derek. But I only saw one episode, so...

"Anyone can make them cry, but it takes a genius to make them laugh" - Charlie Chaplin.

Call me cynical, but I would imagine that Gervais isn't being entirely sincere with After Life, and that he wanted to manipulate the audience with something overly sentimental just to gain kudos and seem deeper and nicer than he probably actually is...

Agreed. His Helen Keller and Anne Frank routines were particularly sensitive.
Charlie Chaplin said, A day without laughter is a wasted day. And he was right. That's why I never watch Charlie f**king Chaplin.

He should have stuck at two series - as usual.
The 3rd series (and I couldn't watch it all) is just much of the same with 'c**t' thrown in liberally to shock.
And aaah look, they all lived happily ever after. The smelly mental hoarder found someone and the rude woman ended up with the shitbox letter poster.

From what I can tell, the second series was repetition and the third The Happy Ending. Surplus. Still, at least it means there won't be any more.
