That has to be one of the most naïve and simplistic, and in respect of the last four lines, most insulting generalisations I've read on these forums.
Clearly it is though. If it was their own money they wouldn't have to run lots of marathons (and in doing so secure maximum publicity) to raise it. They could just do a bank transfer nice and quietly and nobody need know.
It was a sweeping statement. But the term 'champagne socialist' is always used as a sweeping term to criticise anyone who has money who also has a social conscience.
I don't think anyone who wants to improve society should really be criticised for it, regardless of whether they are rich or poor.
We have no way of knowing if Izzard gives money privately as well or not. I would suspect he does. I suspect his critics wouldn't like him any more if he did. It's the fact he is a socialist they dislike. If he was poor and a socialist, they would still dislike him. He would be preaching "the politics of envy" or something.
Your comments indicate you find the spectacle of Izzard (or David Walliams or whoever) raising money for worthy causes distasteful. I doubt the beneficiaries of those charities would agree!
p.s. only just saw that! But that post was definitely still about left-wing or socialist comedians, so still relevant I'd say.
