Left-wing or socialist leaning comedians? Page 2

All you've got to say is "Trump".

Italy: Ascanio Celestini

Never heard of him... Italian standup is still in the middle ages. And that's just me.
Roy Chubby Brown isn't a particularly astute political theorist. If by right winger you mean dick...

It seems to me that most comedians nowadays are left-wing?

Supply and demand, as Tribale has demonstrated there are plenty of right wing comedians, they're just not popular in the UK. Why not try some of the American right wing comedians, I can recommend Bill Burr he's huge at the moment as was Drew Carey.

If you speak Italian well and you haven't check out Ascanio Celestini, you should remedy that. The 'quality' Italian scene is more based around theater than it is the Anglo model of stand-ups and clubs so you might be looking in the wrong places and in the wrong ways.

I'd agree that Roy Chubby Brown isn't astute but that other poster was suggesting right-wing comics were invisible etc.

To be fair, you do have to seek out Chubby. He's rarely even mentioned in the mainstream - whether that's the press, or in broadcast comedy - and certainly doesn't appear.

Yet he's one of the few for whom releasing a live stand-up DVD is still financially viable. There's a big disconnect between the media in Britain (very much of the left) and the public (right-leaning).

I would dispute that the media in Britain are 'very much of the left.'

The Guardian is the only vaguely left newspaper of note and it represents the right wing of Labour which would place it in the orbit of a conservative party in Germany or Finland for example. On the other hand, consider the Times, the Telegraph, the FT and of course, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, The Sun, The Daily Star. Even if you were to add the Daily Mirror or Morning Star to that list, it's clear that the center of gravity is obviously right-wing.

There's certainly no socialist leaning TV network in Britain. At most one can say there are socially liberal tendencies, more prominent at the BBC etc which are perfectly compatible with business parties the world over.

You have to seek out Chubby Brown but he's not the only person I listed and you have to seek out Rob Newman these days too for that matter (and who are the new young leftist comedians?).

Here's a longer list of conservative comedians in any case, most of whom I have seen multiple times on TV:

Alistair Williams

US:

Nick Di Paolo

John Sessions

As far as I know, he's not affiliated himself with a traditional political party. Only expressed support for UKIP on the back of disliking the European Union. Happy if you can point otherwise though?

Quote: Tribale @ 7th July 2020, 8:24 PM

Fin Taylor
Konstantin Kisin
Alistair Williams

Fin is a self-described left-winger. Konstantin is a centrist. Alistar is a traditional liberal. I strongly suspect the same is true of a number of the others you mention, including Henning.

Believing in free speech and/or not toeing current prevailing cultural narratives on Brexit or "woke"/political correctness does not dictate one's politics as to capitalism or socialism.

Sessions in 2014. "I get so bored with people going, 'UKIP are a bunch of racists.' They're nothing of the kind. Nigel Farage talks more sense than the rest of the politicians put together.

If you can look at that and not see an ideologically conservative actor...

Fin is not a left-winger and has been rebranding himself as a scold of the left for a while now. He described his 2017 show as himself "weaving my opinions on the failure of left-wing politics, and the immorality of some left-wing attitudes" and said "middle-class liberals are the most fun because they loathe themselves so much"

Konstantin has made attacking left-liberal attitudes central to his act and image. It's fine for someone to hold these views but it's intellectually dishonest to pretend they are something other than what they are.

Feel free to tell me all the other 'progressives' I have put in that list of right-wing comics.

...Then you know the recent history of political parties and culture in Britain.

UKIP decimated the Conservative vote in some areas and the Labour vote in others. It was (is) a single-issue party, bringing together huge ranges of people from across the political spectrum. Dislike of the EU cannot be pinned squarely to politics of left or right; and indeed, the anti-establishment rhetoric of Nigel Farage should by all common stereotypes appeal to those on the left much more than those on the right.

If you find the above people not to your taste, that's absolutely fine - but it doesn't make them all of the right! :)

I wouldn't for a moment make the mistake of calling anyone on the left progressive. ;)

I didn't say a word as to whether I preferred this or that comedian above. The fact that those comedians are right-wing doesn't speak exhaustively as to my evaluation of their work as comedians.

To pretend the statement that "Nigel Farage talks more sense than the rest of the politicians put together" doesn't speak to a conservative mindset is rather odd. The rest of his comments on that topic are still more illuminating:

"This whole business with Germany and Greece. These people get paid to think about these things, all day long. And I can't believe they went, 'Well, here we are, we've got these people in Germany, and they get up at six in the morning, and they work until eight in the evening, and these people in Greece fall out of bed at 11, go and play backgammon, drink a bit of coffee, go and have a siesta and then do an hour's work.' And they expect to get the same benefits, welfare rights, and all the rest of it."

This is a distillation of conservative tropes about how labor is or should be valued. It posits that 'hard work' is primarily what is rewarded in a market economy as opposed to asymmetrical market power, institutional arrangements, individual and national endowments etc. The observable differentials in wages as well as capital gains between Germans and Greeks has nothing to do with siestas and backgammon.

He's perfectly entitled to these right-wing views but they are most assuredly right-wing views with a long pedigree.

John Sessions, happy. Never seen that before. Smug arse.
Italian stand-up barely exists at all. They do a lot of character ''' comedy''' and monologues, hence the theatre tradition. I'll check out the guy you mentioned if I get tired of beer and Mel C videos.

Apart from Beppe Grillo, who's about as funny as Trump, I've yet to see s single Italian comic with insight. It's always women complaining about their dates or men talking about the last time they knocked one out.

Nice to see you've embraced Italian comedy Michael. :)
