Our House

I am surprised there wasn't a thread on this. I enjoyed the 3 episodes that were on the DVD. I really enjoyed it. It isn't the best sitcom ever but it's nice and warm. It's good. The best thing about is the cast. I really love the cast in this, it feels like Carry On as a sitcom if you get what I mean. It's good. It's a pity that there isn't any more episodes. I'm just glad that we have a few episodes otherwise, this wouldn't have been known. What do you think of this show?

Yeah, it's an interesting looking series. Enjoyable few episodes. Would love it if more turned up, to be able to see a better illustration of what the whole was like. Three of 39 doesn't feel wholly representative!

Out of all the episodes, I would have loved to seen the first one, to see how they met and things like that because the characters are different and you wouldn't normally associate these type of characters all together.

From our Guide:

Fate is sealed when nine people - 5 individuals and 2 couples - find themselves in an estate agent's office at the same time, aimlessly searching for a suitable home. Realising that none can afford a property alone, the newly formed band of friends pool their money and purchase a single large house to make their collective own.

But yes - quite!

Were they trying to transfer Carry On to TV?

Not specifically. The series was by the first Carry On screenwriter, but not the production team.

Oh so was this the series that the Sid James song "Our House" came from?

I've always loved that song but didn't know it was linked to a series.

It wasn't. The Sid James novelty record of the title was released in 1973, some eleven years after the demise of the TV sitcom.

Thanks for the clarification. It must be a coincidence then. From memory, the song picks up on concerns about their house being demolished for a motorway. Given the London vibe of it, that taps in to the Abercrombie etc idea for an inner London ring road motorway which, while it was in the planning from shortly after the war, was kept secret until 1964-65. Campaigning against it was fully underway by the late 1960s/early 1970s before the plans were permanently dropped.

I hadn't made that connection myself, thanks!

It was released at the height of the success of Bless This House of course, which I'm sure had far more weight than anything else.

Ah yes. I always feel that series (1971-1976) is slightly underrated. It was very solid and while memorable for Sid and, of course, the charms of Sally Geeson, Diana Coupland had in my humble opinion an unconventional older sexual allure. Out of interest here she is in her younger days : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huo8mqHjU4I

"Our House" appears from You Tube to have been performed at Carry On London at the Victoria Palace, London (4th Oct - 12 Oct 1973) and presumably the Birmingham Hippodrome (14th Sept - 29 Sept 1973). However, this is not exactly confirmed by the programme as stated - https://www.carryon.org.uk/london.htm - even if the disc is mentioned.

It does bring to mind the No 1 Grandad by Clive Dunn (1970-1) which was written by Herbie Flowers and Kenny Pickett although it compares and contrasts too in sentiment with Crosby Stills Nash and Young's American "Our House" (1970). Benny Hill had reached No 1 in 1971-72 with Ernie so in Britain comedy/novelty was all in vogue. Even in the mid 1970s there was Carrot's Funky Moped and the Goodies' Funky Gibbon plus King of the Cops by Billy Howard who I met with the New Seekers. But I guess later it took Madness to revive part of the spirit, not least with their "Our House" in 1982.

Ah!

Yes, it seems the original release made clear it was taken from the show.

Except that it is an unusual name and he was, erm, rangy. Quote "At the age of 18 he joined Bevin's Travelling Show, and subsequently toured with circuses in Britain and throughout Europe." Years later, the Carry Ons were a circus of sorts!.

Oh. Hold on. This is the one:

A friend at one time of Gary Glitter. Oh dear. Perhaps the two were related?

Whatever, the next carry on film, if there ever is one, should be "Carry On Circus".
