How appropriate! Procrastination by the Damned on my signed white vinyl copy of Evil Spirits.

The Slow Readers Club - Plant The Seed

Five songs played last night either by Marc Riley or Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music. All new. Most very new. If these are anything to go by, 2020 could be the year of delicacy and a little melody. It's not quite Postcard Records yet but, hey, it's alright. So, first then to a man who is 12 days older than me so I assume we must have a similar sort of astrology. I've always liked his song writing and musicianship. Then comes a bunch of people who are all probably teenagers (ish).

I could be very wrong of course but it reminded me of the Eurythmics :)

Not sure if it has a label yet.

Let's settle on post post-emo at the cutting edge of hipster lounge. Whistling nnocently

Thx for "The Face by Fabienne Delsol - Music from The state51 Conspiracy"

I like her version of "Laisse tomber les filles" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w08v0iMPeM

This old school sound today is very pleasing, I'm reminded by it of The Ventures "Super Psychedelics" 1967 album.

One interesting fact: their song "Vibrations" was used for decades in USSR TV weekly programme about world politics:

+ France Gall - Poupée de cire, poupée de son https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRva0YOVtcI

Aw, thank you. What a fabulous post and I have watched all the clips. It turns out that Ms Desol is 67 so she is "only" 48 years past her teenage years. I reckon that makes my guess pretty close. Really I should have known this - and her - being a trainspottery muso type. Apparently she often toured with Thee Headcoats who were a part of the Medway Scene (Medway being a river in Kent with a lot of ugly towns around it plus Rochester) but it is Wild Billy Childish and the Buff Medways from there who I know especially well. (Clip one below). That would be why Marc Riley knows and likes her. He and Gideon Coe easily outdo me muso wise and very late in the day (they have been on the radio most evenings for donkey's years) I will listen to them regularly as I find what they do interesting and many of their choices are new to me.

But returning to Fabienne, I have worked out that she could in theory have sung at, say, 15 alongside Nico or Marianne Faithfull or Francoise Hardy - that sort of chanteuse person. Much later she could and probably should have done duets with, say, Lloyd Cole or Edwyn Collins. And then just a while after that time, late 1980s, she could have been a middle aged mentor to young Vanessa Paradis - although she wasn't - and then moved on to Stereolab before waiting ten years to team up with Wolverhampton's Ben Christophers, neither of which sadly she did. But then neither did France Gall who just clouted the UK's Kathy Kirby at Eurovision before doing weirdy stuff with Serge Gainsbourg and humanitarian projects.

The Ventures were purely the classic surf sound to me and I had no idea that they had moved into surf psychedelia in the late 1960s. Very interesting as was their Soviet television inclusion. Perhaps it was some kind of response to their 50th state contribution. Clip two although following your terrific efforts I also feel a second post with other clips coming on.

Intro especially so.

I see the 80s didn't totally pass you by then. :D

Depeche Mode was what struck me the most with this track. Slow Readers Club aren't a band I know well - I checked them out a week ago because they turned up on a gig listing, and the combo of their name and their pic intrigued me.

The Slow Readers Club - Plant The Seed

This is quite a strong track isn't it.

I see what JT means about the Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams etc - but my suggestion is Depeche Mode if Dave Gahan had been joined on vocals by Jimmy Somerville. Understandably, the idea never crossed my mind at the time but now it has been done it is obviously a pretty good one.

This thread is a veritable mine of interesting information and I can soon put a stop to all that.

Now I know this is the 80's.It's from my BH's favourite LP.So I've heard it quite a lot!

They seem to have a range of influences/references, and generally combine/showcase them pleasingly. Editors is another more contemporary influence than their 80s ones. I've enjoyed all the stuff I've listened to, but I'm not totally convinced yet that they have that extra spark.

You better hide my post from your BH. :)

I've always had a bit of an aversion to Tears For Fears - probably linked to my punk roots. Their music didn't click with me, and their image certainly didn't. Yuppies in dodgy knitwear.

Yet listening to that track, it's actually okay. Reminds me a bit of Spandau Ballet, especially the sax. I didn't mind the New Romantics. I even tried to get into Blitz once, but was turned down as I couldn't be bothered to dress up. Tears For Fears weren't New Romantics though. They just put my back up, maybe because they seemed a bit smug, like U2, whereas the New Romantics seemed to have a sense of humour, or were a bit silly. Plus, like I said, their music wasn't for me anyway.

Having said that, I was curious to see what Lorde did with "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", as it got a mention on that covers thread on Digital Spy. Nearly 32 million views/plays!

Yes,well,um...I've got another :)

Enough of all that sort of stuff:

Sorry if I just trashed your wedding song/ happy courtship memories. :)

I'm normally better behaved.

I put it down to pre-Brexit/pre-Transfer Window closing and no bloody replacement for Kane/pre-Australian Open Finals Tension!

But that Primal Scream track is helping just fine.

Goodo.I don't like TFF at all but I put up with them. Her young girl heart throb was David Essex so it could be worse.
