So I have been led to believe from certain quarters.

But I was a modern romantic the first time around, ie not with eyeliner in the early 1980s.

Vaughan Williams, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Holst, Scriabin, Ives, Falla, Coleridge-Taylor.

I think you will find they were all born in the 1870s as were around 70 other superior non-stuffy figures.

Anyways, I'm pleased you like my pop choices.

I'm starting to think I need to learn more about soul in the 1963-1965 period. I like it a lot more than I used to - and I always quite liked it while thinking I preferred the later stuff - but my knowledge could be considerably improved there.

First one was used as the intro music for the recurring Polish Cafe sketches in Harry & Paul, so evokes those. The earlier ones were (relatively) more subtle and imo funnier.

Enjoyed the second one too. Can't remember hearing an Echo and the Bunnymen cover before. There are loads of Clash ones out there. I have 2 cds that Uncut put out solely of Clash covers.

I love Harry and Paul - that's my favourite Harry Enfield project - and I quite like Nouvelle Vague.

Echo - I have just looked into it. There doesn't appear to be a lot of substance cover wise - too many direct copyists - but the Decemberists have performed Bring on the Dancing Horses live. It is on YT but the sound quality isn't brilliant.

1982/3 - Two of the ones that were handed on a tape to Kid Jensen at the Whitley Bay Radio 1 Road show and led to a session on his programme and then on to John Peel : They were weird, like nobody else and obviously very raw but there was a big something there. Peel's fave was Lions In My Own Garden and it is easy to see why. It was just at the start of their coherence, erudite in its way and before commercialism. But many would be surprised Peel was ever into them.)

Kid did quite a good programme on "United DJs - The Station of the Stars" - when Mike Read, age 69 not 67 whatever he claims, set it up but I haven't seen a programme there from him recently. A lot of his recent time - Kid not Mike - has obviously been Lodge based what with him being a freemason and he is still a fan of Crystal Palace though sadly he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. Still, he was in fine form less than a month ago when interviewed by Shaun Tilley about his memories of Radio 1. It's in the second half hour of this one hour clip and well worth a listen but don't leave it too long as it is only available for 3-4 days. I asked Shaun this week if he would do another series on the grounds that series one has been excellent and even suggested to him someone who I would especially like to hear on it. Quite a big name from the past who has not really be heard on the airwaves for 30 odd years. He has told me that he is actively looking into it although the bloke concerned is currently on a six month holiday. I really should start charging for this information.
