The Sitcom Mass Discussion, Part III
Last week we considered racism in shows like Till Death Us Do Part and asked the question, Are shows like Till Death Us Do Part racist because they depict racist views, or are they non-racist because they satirise the sexist views depicted?
We followed this mass chat by considering sexism in shows like Till Death Us Do Part and asking the question, Are shows like Till Death Us Do Part sexist because they depict sexist views, or are they non-sexist because they satirise the sexist views depicted?
In the turd part of this mass bullshit, we shall reflect on homphobia in shows like Till death Us Do Part. The question today is, Are shows like Till Death Us Do Part homophobic because they depict homophobic views, or are they non-homophobic because they satirise the homophobic views depicted?
Some argue that shows like Till Death Us Do Part are homophobic because they depict homophobic views; others hold that they are non-homophobic because they satirise the homophobic views depicted.
'Shows like Till Death Us Do Part are homophobic,' argues one group: 'After all, they depict homophobic views.' 'No,' argues the other group, They are non-homophobic. They satirise these homophobic views depicted.'
However, this argument does not convince the first group. 'These shows are homophobic,' they argue. 'They must be homophobic because they depict homophobic views.' But the counterarguing group counterargues its counterargument: 'Yes, these shows do depict homophobic views. But they are non-homophobic because they satirise the homophobic views depicted.'
What do you think? Are these shows homophobic because they depict homophobic views? Or are they non-homophobic because they satirise the homophobic views depicted?
We took this discussion onto the streets. Are shows like Till Death Us Do Part homophobic? They depict homophobic views, don't they?... Or are they non-homophobic because they actually satirise these homophobic views depicted?
Some argued that these shows are homophobic, and pointed to the homophobic views they depict, whereas others held the opposite view, arguing that they were actually non-homophobic as they were satirising these homophobic views.
We contacted the writer of one of these shows that may be homophobic because it depicts homophobic views or non-homophobic because it satirises the homophobic views it depicts, and asked: 'Is your show homophobic because it depicts homophobic views? Or is it non-homophobic because it satirises the homophobic views depicted?'
