BREXIT Page 15
For health reasons and because we're lucky enough to afford it, we send our ironing away to be done. Today, had a conversation with the man who collects it. He didn't see how any of it would affect him. I pointed ou that if prices go up, folk might not afford to have somebody do their ironing. Hadn't occurred to him. He's not thick, just another ordinary person who doesn't realise the terrible consequences that Brexit may hold for him.
Quote: Teddy Paddalack @ 1st November 2019, 3:07 PMIf the Lib Dems did win ...
They won't - despite me voting for them.
And they know that.
They just want to sweep up as many Remainer votes as possible so that they get enough seats to lend their support to a minority Labour govt on a vote by vote basis - on condition, I'm guessing, they go direct to a second referendum rather than chasing Corbyn's ludicrous 'better deal'.
Quote: Lazzard @ 1st November 2019, 1:19 PM....Brexit candidates in every seat is the best news this Remainer has heard all week!
Apparently Labour leave voters are more likely to vote Brexit Party than Conservative, so sadly it may help Brexit. Especially as Corby isn't talking alliances. Let's be honest Jo Swinson is the best looking leader, in more ways than one, but revoking article 50 seems harsh ??? A second referendum always seemed the only way to avoid civil war, rather than forcing half "the peoples will" on the other half.
Quote: Teddy Paddalack @ 1st November 2019, 12:29 PMI'm sorry Alfred but this has left me scratching my head? You come one the internet to suggest it should be shut down? Your reason is because its ruining pubs? I don't get that bit at all?
We used to go the pub to socialise and talk about the news and sport. Now the internet is our main venue for this. And as a result pubs are vanishing from our communities. Like Billy I use the internet out of convenience but I wish it didn't exist and could easily cope without it.
Quote: Teddy Paddalack @ 1st November 2019, 12:29 PMThen you say that Labour voters are disappearing? Well if you read the Daily Mail , Telegraph and the Scum etc then I could see why you would believe that.
However if you went on facts as opposed fanaticism a basic Google search would give you the current membership numbers:Labour 485,000 July 2019
SNP 125,534 December 2018
Conservatives 191,000 30 September 2019
Liberal Democrats 120,845 6 September 2019
So if having read them if you are still of the same opinion?
Yes I'm still of the same opinion. Labour consistently has more party members than the others and consistently fails to get elected as much as the Tory party. General elections are open to the general electorate, not just members. Although they can be wrong surveys have shown an alarming drop in the number of prospective Labour voters for this election.
Quote: Firkin @ 2nd November 2019, 3:27 PMA second referendum always seemed the only way to avoid civil war, rather than forcing half "the peoples will" on the other half.
You're just delaying the war, Firk. At some point you're going to have to enforce the will of the majority however tight it is.
Kipper, do you know the word 'research'? That's one of many things for which the internet is wonderful. I don't just mean Wikipedia which isn't always accurate. I imagine many writers here will agree with me that the internet beats messing about in umpteen different libraries hands down.

I am surprised that you put convenience above the abuse (often resulting in suicides) constantly being traded on "social media", the life savings that people lose in scams, the terrorist action that is often organised via the internet and the potential of the sabotage of essential services by unfriendly foreign powers, who, some would argue, have already intervened in, among other things, Brexit and the election of President Trump, both of which are subjects dear to your heart.
It seems a high price to pay for the convenience of booking a holiday without using a travel agent (many of whom, as we know, have ceased trading as a result), placing a bet without going down the bookies or doing some research without having to visit a library (many of which have closed as a result, losing a vital service to communities).

I've read that many professional writers hate it because it's given them too much competition and they find it hard to winkle a research bursary from publishers ie. a free trip to foreign lands when they can find out what they need in their bedroom.

You're being incredibly silly, but That's what I expect from you. Kipper seems to think pub conversations supersede all.

Another piece of silly rubbish. Away back to your pub cronies, man.
Don't know how you class 'professionals' but I get paid for what I write and I wouldn't be without the internet. Away back to the pub, if That's your level.
The internet is a great place for ordinary people to express their feelings, get together and learn about what's really going on in the political world. To shut it down would be just what the politicians would like, to keep us ignorant of what they are really getting up to.

Dismissing something as "incredibly silly" or "another piece of silly rubbish" is not an argument (try telling that to those who have been affected by the issues I mentioned). I would have liked to have heard a counter-argument but that was a little optimistic on my part I will admit.

In theory perhaps (although maybe they'd be better doing it in person and so developing their social skills). Unfortunately, like so many things, it is misused by people who only want to use it for their own criminal or anti-social purposes.
Hearsay isn't good enough, my friend. I get the impression you don't actually mix with real humans much and what you quote is just things you've read and you jump on them to support your old man's argument. I have many friends suffering from serious depression. They don't blame the internet. You've plucked stuff from the air and don't have any back up. Or, to put it another way, you just want a smart arsed argument. You need to get out more.
Quote: Briosaid @ 2nd November 2019, 9:15 PMHearsay isn't good enough, my friend.
Hearsay? So is it that you don't believe the reports of suicides resulting from abuse on social media and the loss of innocent people's life savings as a result of scams and hacking (as well as the other issues I mentioned earlier)? Or is it that you just don't care?

That's not what I said. The point is, please do correct me if I'm wrong, you do not know the people who've commited suicide. You do not know those who've been scammed. You've read it in the media, and it's the job of the media to report these things which doesn't mean 50% of people have commited suicide, or 50% of people have been scammed. Can I suggest you widen your reading to include things other than the Daily Mail?
Also, let me say there are 3/4 people on this board who'll happily prance in to disagree with ANYTHING I say. You're one of them, always have been. I don't care that you don't like me.. I just think you're an ignorant Daily Mail reading moron, so we're quits.
