After reading his Crying With Laughter: My Life Story many years ago, I found out by a devious route where he lived and wrote telling him how much I enjoyed it, and he sent me a long hand written letter back thanking me - not many would bother. Confirmed to me what a lovely man he was. 
If you haven't read it then do - lot of saucy anecdotes, which surprised me and for which he got criticised at the time.
