There's the good, the bad and the ugly in that lot.

Jelly Roll would be my good.:)

Can I recommend the recordings he did of himself playing the paper and comb?

I am not aware of any paper and comb players who were better.

Love the 70s sound of this and how the chorus sounds like a dancehall anthem and a stepping stone to Northern Soul. The hat reminds me of 80s films like Breakfast Club/Uncle Buck/Ferris Bueller's Day Off and she looks totally different when she takes it off. From Hollywood starlet to bullseye contenstant :D

Marshall Hain - Dancing In The City

Northern Soul? I loved this at the time it came out but cannot see any similarity to Northern Soul.

I must stop stuttering and quoting Bowie. Time to make some ch-ch-ch-changes.

I said stepping stone meaning it's soulful and has a beat so I could see someone at home on a school night listening to this on their record player and it leading to faster, more dancy stuff like Motown and Northern Soul. I can see it playing in a Working Mans club and everyone joining in at the end of the night which is similar to the social aspect I envisage the Northern Soul scene had.

I feel sorry for her having to clap on the offbeat all the way through which must have been difficult but she's impeccible at doing that and miming the song. I love the smouldering Bratpack look and theatrical expressions.

Don Thomas - Come On Train

Ever tried any of the N. Soul dance moves, DT?

Great track which has the Northern Soul quality of making you need to jump up and dance :D I could never do the spinning around because I get dizzy and if I tried the kicking move I would probably kick someone in the face. I used to go to a Northern Soul night and what stood out the most apart from the energetic and uplifting music was how varied the revellers were. The age range was from 18 - 80 and all mingling on the dance floor and having a great time. There were a group of people in wheelchairs that always came and would be at the side of the dancefloor soaking up the atmosphere. Wish I had been there for real at places like the Wigan Casino.

I bought a Northern Soul CD compilation and two really stood out. This one because of the vocals.

Frankie And The Classicals - What Should I Do

This one was also on the album but it's not really Northern Soul. Still a great song and I can imagine it playing at a 70s roller disco cum nightclub on a Saturday afternoon before the skates come off and the Northern Soul comes on.

Barnaby Bye - Can't Live This Way

I bought a Northern Soul CD compilation...

Was it this one? £7.99 is pretty good for 3 discs.

Good stuff!

There are a few "quirky" (dodgy) tracks on my comp, definitely not recommended for a first date, but musically they groove.

skullsnaps - i'm your pimp

Little Hank - Mr Bang Bang Man

It's this one but I paid a lot less than the Amazon price. Both tracks are also on disc 3 of this compilation but it doesn't show that in the track list. If you select the image that shows the reverse of the album you can hover over disc 3 and the tracks are listed as 7 and 18.

I bought the DVD Northern Soul when it came out in 2014 and I enjoyed it but it's something I've only watched once. It had some good moments and I liked the characters but it delved a bit too far in to the drug fuelled, violent side of the scene which I don't know about but thought maybe it wasn't as bad as the film suggested. Or at least I hope it wasn't.

Some very interesting documentories about the DJs behind introducing the music to the UK and one British DJ in particular who went to America and spent a fortune on as many record singles as he could bring back which turned him in to the DJ everyeone wanted to see because he could throw on new tunes and send the place wild.

I just received a batch of vinyl through the post including Second Winter by Johnny Winter, The Old Grey Whistle Test - Test Pressing and I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow. I'm currently listening to the album Got to Get you into my life by Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. Such a great soulful voice and sound. He really should've been massive - and I don't mean (Toe) Fat!

Listening to an overly loud punk band at a dive bar as I wait for my friends to take the stage.

Wilco?

I am presently listening to "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston. A great song that easily finds it's place among the greatest hits of all time. What a song, just incredible.:D:D
