I read the news today oh boy! Page 1,931

Questions need to be asked.

Well, the Tory government voted down legislation requiring landlords to ensure properties are "fit for human habitation": https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/jan/12/tories-reject-move-to-ensure-rented-homes-fit-for-human-habitation

And Boris shut down fire stations.

Meanwhile, the contractor that thought flammable cladding was a good idea has just removed all reference to the refurbishment from its website. Cached version still accessible.

.

Because that regulation already exists ?

The plastic cladding has already been linked to several tower fires in Sydney.

And there's a whole blog from the residents warning about the risks of fire.

https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2017/06/14/grenfell-tower-fire/

It's like the plot of a disaster movie.

Inevitably the words of Steve McQueen from Towering Inferno resonate (not verbatim) "The day must come when the fire service have the final say with these tall buildings" i.e. NOT THE FUCKING MONEY PEOPLE/LANDLORDS/ARCHITECTS/BUILDERS.

There was someone on the Beeb News lunch-time saying this rainproof cladding was only put on a few months ago when the building was "improved" and that it was installed with a gap between it and the building........................so creating a chimney/flue effect. I mean, just how stupid do you have to be not to see that was going to happen.

Utter failure from those in control and someone should go to prison for this.

What the other people in the surrounding four blocks are thinking right now I cannot imagine.

Project video from the cladding supplier (as named in previous article) -

God only knows what i would do if i lived in one of these featured buildings after todays tragedy.

Looks like a Trump hater shot a congressman and others at baseball practice today. I'm surprised that he didn't kill anyone while using a rifle at close range. He's either a terrible shot or he deliberately aimed to wound.

A Facebook page belonging to a person with the same name includes pictures of Democratic presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders, and rhetoric against President Trump, including a post that reads: "Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co."

Charles Orear, 50, a restaurant manager from St. Louis, said in an interview Wednesday that he became friendly with Hodgkinson during their work together in Iowa on Sanders's campaign.

Orear said Hodgkinson was a passionate progressive and showed no signs of violence or malice toward others.

"You've got to be kidding me," Orear said when told by phone about the shooting.

Nutters come in all flavours...

Horrendous tower block fire (can there be worse?) in West London.

.

Awful, awful, awful, and that it could happen with so many fire regulations these days, I'm sure there will be lots of questions to answer to re this but on first glance it looks like it was an accident waiting to happen according to the residents who say that they their concerns weren't listened to.

Yup.
Another one offed three UPS employees then killed himself this AM (US time).
Guns, eh?

If they're so bent on suicide, I wish these scumbags would just do themselves in before they kill a bunch of innocent people.

A friend of mine who used to be in the fire service told me that the recently added cladding was the cause of the problem. Before ths was added they would've been quite safe places.

I bet the people in the neighbouring blocks are shitting themselves.

Somebody got paid millions to install the cladding and now somebody will be paid millions to remove it.

I told you so.....................

May on the news tonight waffling on about it and me thinking "No don't...........don't say it", but she did.................."Lessons will be learnt from this".

No it won't. That's just bullshit. Now f**k off.

Do the other similar blocks nearby actually have the cladding? From photos I can't quite tell.

Ugh, I hadn't thought of it like this before. https://twitter.com/Channel4News/status/875289074185228288 (Very short video.)
The cladding wasn't for the poor people inside, it was for the rich people who had to look at an ugly block. That certainly has the ring of truth.
