Hah!
Macron is pretty cool though! He's making me rather fond of France.

Oh dear, more banal excuses.

I must be missing something here - what's so bad about France? At least they haven't voted in a racist, misogynist loon.

I think you meant to say banana excuses.

Surely I don't need to explain it on a UK-based message board?
I was not at all impressed by my two visits to Paris. Muggings and surly people just aren't my thing.

Let's not forget Mitterand. Fun fact: I used to walk his dog, a black lab.

J'adored living in le Frogland and Paris. Did I mention I used to walk Mitterand's dog?

That's no way to speak of a lady.

But at least they can get a lungful of our nice clean air.
For now, that is.
Thanks, Donald.

Ahh, the fresh, clean air of Paris...
Fine-particle air pollution in France causes approximately 48,000 premature deaths a year.

Possibly. But let's hope America won't go for a tv/movie personality again next time.
Quote: DaButt @ 1st June 2017, 11:15 PMYou might call Trump's election The Hillary Effect. She was so unlikeable that we wound up with Donald Trump as president.

I sincerely doubt that a majority of American voters found her likable. People don't always vote for a candidate because they like them, they often vote that way because they dislike their opponent even more. I know that's how it went in my case.
Genuine question: do you really think the majority would have voted for Bernie Sanders? I mean, lots of people here in the German speaking world say Sanders would have smashed Trump. But I find that difficult to believe. Would America vote for someone who's calling himself a 'socialist'?
Quote: Gordon Bennett @ 2nd June 2017, 12:11 PMPossibly. But let's hope America won't go for a tv/movie personality again next time.
The Rock would probably make a good president. He seems like he's a good guy and he's not beholden to Big Politics like career politicians. People like Al Franken, Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood and Ahnold have all done good jobs as politicians.
My vote would be for television personality Mike Rowe. Common sense, hard work, middle America at its finest.

I don't think so. But his strong showing (along with Trump's) showed just how strong the anti- political establishment sentiment is among Americans. They were sick of the status quo in Washington.

That's the part I can understand. Still, I read a lot of user comments on FB, contrary to what you said, lots of Trump voters (allegedly) don't think of him as the lesser of two evils but as a great, honest and capable guy. Especially the 'honest' bit is hard for me get. How can a guy with dozens of lawsuits hanging over his head be considered to be an acceptable candidate? Even if he was innocent (which I'm sure he isn't) it would still make him look like a 'trouble magnet'. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Clinton was an acceptable candidate either. Both parties should have pulled them out of the primaries. But back to my point, how can a sane person think that Trump, with his several court cases (including rape, fraud etc.) is the perfect man for this big job? Is this wishful thinking?
He wasn't a woman. Which is what it came down to for a lot of people. (Not all, or most. But a lot.) To them, ANY man is better than a woman. Trump was not qualified or prepared for such a position on any level, and I genuinely don't believe anyone could have thought he was.

Never underestimate the stupidity of a nation that obsessively worships the untalented pile of shit that is the Kardashian family. And where many people are too stupid to eat healthily.
Good call DaButt, capture this view whilst we can still see it.
