British Comedy Guide

Fan Art

Not sure if this is the right section to put this in. But it's art of people and stand-ups. I figured why not post a few more of my silly little drawings of British comedy people.

Some are better than others, and I've posted a few of these in the 'fancy' thread. But I thought I'd share a few more, because why not?

I hope I do a better job of posting the image tag code thing this time.

Here's one from Inside No 9, 'Sardines':

One from 'The Riddle of the Sphinx':

(I'm working on one from 'Diddle Diddle Dumpling', but it's not done yet.)

Here's a little 'League of Spectralmen' thing I did:

More Reece, this time from Psychoville:

A Dylan Moran I did last week (though I never quite finished it. Still looks pretty wonky):

Here's that Noel Fielding everyone seemed to like:

My woman-crush Julia Davis:

Jimmy Carr, who I really only drew because in my mind it seemed like a reasonable exercise in putting off doing my taxes:

A wonky Greg Davies:

And a silly Man With The Stick thing (points to anyone who can work out what's written on his helmet):

Any suggestions of people to draw? On my list right now are David Baddiel, and Matt Berry, Rhod Gilbert, and maybe Richard Herring. I need to draw more women though. Any ideas?

Very good Davida. I would be interested to see if you can do any old school such as anyone from Hancock's Half Hour or Steptoe and Son? Women - Acorn Antiques?

These are wonderful Davida. You have a talent. The Greg Davies one especially.

Greg Davies!
The Man With The Stick!

<3 All of them are excellent.

Roisin Conaty might be fun to draw. Or Michelle Gomez.

Or Theresa May, one of our best-loved comedians? Very good portraits, by the way.

They are brilliant Davida.:D

Both good suggestions! I'll put them on the list.

And thank you!

Good suggestions, but hard to find decent photos to use as a reference. Seem to be mostly lo res and black and white. It's an interesting challenge though. Victoria Wood should be on my list, at least.

These are great. Did you ever have art/drawing lessons -- or is it just raw talent? Whenever I try to draw or sketch a human, it ends up looking like a grotesque caricature because I can't draw realistically. Animals are a bit easier though.

If you're keen to draw more women of British comedy, well, there are the Carry On stars (and starlets). Plus Penelope Keith, Mollie Sugden, the Ab Fab pair, Dawn French, Jo Brand, etc. Though I'm not sure if they're "current" or in vogue.

You've captured Jimmy Carr beautifully - his wide-eyed stare.

No real formal art classes. Just a lifelong doodler. I don't think I'm particularly talented and don't know what I'm doing most of the timw, but maybe I compensate for that with my patience and persistence. I've only been doing portraits for about a year and didn't start doing them in color until a month or so ago.

Great suggestions! I definitely want to do Dawn French and Jo Brand. I'm not bothered about what's "current" or "in vogue".

Thank you! I tried to make him look like a criminal. I think I succeeded, haha.

I have total portrait envy as yours are brilliant and I haven't done myself with anything other than pixels for years.

My commissioned stuff is just a bit of mockery generally such as: http://www.flying-colours.me.uk/chef.html

Thanks! :)

I wouldn't say mockery though. I certainly couldn't do what you do. I've done some digital art, but my tablet broke before I had a chance to get much experience with it. Mainly just did portraits with that too. I should branch out and draw other stuff. I'm just slightly obsessional and combining two of my favourite things, art and comedy, is such a pleasurable way to pass the time. Doesn't hurt that I get to stare at some people's beautiful faces for hours while drawing them. That's probably weird. There are a few people's faces who I've drawn so many times I've memorized every forehead wrinkle and eyelid crease, and nostril flare, and ear shapes and stubble pattern etc. Steve Pemberton's chin is quite memorable. And Reece has that adorable little scar under his left eye. I'm going to shut up now. I'm sounding creepy.

Almost done drawing two Steve Pembertons. I'll post them if they turn out all right. So far they're a bit wonky. But coloured pencil is pretty forgiving. I might be able to whip them into shape yet.

I meant that the brief was to mock certain professions or disciplines to create the characters. Unfortunately, as a digital artist & illustrator it is assumed you can draw caricatures (I'd love to, but I can't) so you are asked quite often, as in the case of magazine pages. Was such a great gig (series of 9) I couldn't turn it down, but instead of explaining that I couldn't give them exaggerated features like a classic caricature artist, I scuttled off and prepared visuals that were out-of-proportion given relevant roles and just a little bit silly instead, and luckily, they loved them and gave me work for years on the back of it.

But that's all rambling. I guess if I went back to pencil/charcoal I'd just get frustrated at not having a history panel for going back a few stages if I made a stroke I didn't care for (and how many times have we all thought of command-Z keys to undo after dropping something or having an accident?!) so pixels are my bitch now - airbrushing in Photoshop mainly, which also comes in handy when one is not too hot with a camera which I use constantly to photograph my craft stuff.

But you should send your drawings to the subjects themselves (I have just started using Twitter for images and am following quite a few comics on there) - I'm sure they'd be very flattered, and you've even somehow managed to make Jimmy Carr look less like a sex pest (he is a bit grubby despite saying they're just jokes - but they still come from inside his head!). I like Jimmy on 8 Out of 10 Cats 'cos he has to be funny without the smut, but his stand-up puts him in my category of bloke-you-would-avoid-in-the-pub-if-he-as-much-as-looked-at-you, as it would really put me off if I'd ever had a boyfriend who had that sort of nasty stuff going on upstairs.

And just incidentally, you are definitely weird . . . all creative types are - comics, writers, pixel and pencil pushers, but only to those who aren't - we know the truth, and that's the fact that we all really believe we are rock stars!

I was apprehensious about going back to pencil and paper after doing digital only for about a year. And I was definitely a bit shit at it at first, but I got used to it surprisingly quickly. Still a lot to learn though. I don't actually know what I'm doing. I don't really have any training unless you count youtube.

Weirdly the Jimmy Carr I prefer is the smutty rude one back when he was still on form touring and putting out DVDs every year. I've sort of lost interest in him at this point now the more he seems to be selling out and taking on loads of hosting gigs on telly with shoddy jokes that a lot of the time I'm guessing he didn't even write. Does anyone else think he's totally sold out at this point? It sealed it for me when I saw he was going to be hosting "Your Face or Mine". Maybe it will be good, I don't know, but it sounds dreadful. I still like him on Cats though. I think he's perfect for that. But also, his new tour seems to be a "Best-Of"-i.e.-I'm-too-lazy-to-write-a-full-set-anymore-and-can't-be-arsed-to-tour-anymore tour, and that just reeks of "sell-out" to me.

I've tweeted a few drawings to various people, but usually don't, as I don't think my drawings are particularly good. I did get a response from Felicia Day (if any of you know who that is) for a digital drawing I did of her. And I sent a Field of England drawing to Ben Wheatley who for some bizarre reason followed me on twitter. I kind of want to do a drawing of Reece and Steve that I'm happy enough to send off to them to get signed, though it would probably take a year to get back if they sent them back at all.

An yeah, I'm definitely weird. I'm glad you agree, ha!

Couple of more drawings I finished recently. Well, they're not quite finished, but I got tired of messing with them.

Here's a Steve Pemberton.

Image

Another Steve Pemberton out of "The Riddle of the Sphinx" that didn't turn out quite how I was hoping...but it's, something!

Image

And! It lines up (almost) with the one I did of Reece not too long ago, and I think they look kind of okay side by side.

Image

I know I should probably draw a more diverse set of people, but I...don't want to? Not at the moment anyway. I will do, eventually, once I get tired of Reece's face. Scratch that. I don't see that happening anytime soon. I'm a lost cause.

Anyone want to put in a request? Preferably of someone who doesn't have a confusing beard? I will hopefully get round to some of the suggestions you've already given me, soonish. But if you for some reason would enjoy a random colored-pencil-hobbyist's take on a favourite comedian of yours, or anyone really, let me know!
