They were (I'm sure still are) great. No real attitude and full of humour. And they've done some really varied stuff;

New Rose
Fan Club
Curtain Call
Eloise.... to name just a few. I've ordered their new album too.

DaButt, I'm sure you already own this:

Great list. I've got none of these. Defintely need stuff by The Firm and Curved Air.

I sincerely hope that Chappers doesn't feel the same way as me, but that first album by The Firm is a strong contender for My Worst Ever Buy. Love Zep, Free & Bad Company, but I didn't like a single song, or the overall sound - not at all what I was hoping for.

So Gordon, I'd check it out first before you splash out on it.

I owned that Sharks album once upon a time too. :)

Was curious how I'd feel about that Firm album thirty years+ later, so I just checked out one of the generally considered highlights.

The Firm - Radioactive

Yep, still not my thing. Though you might like the funky bass, Gordon. The 80s production sound, especially the drums, is one of my "issues".

Got to say, though, that the clothes & hair (bassist) are a bit of a laugh.

I've not played the Firm one yet nor Curved Air. However Curved Air were one of my favourite bands in the 70s. I bought their second, third and fourth albums when they came out and bought the first one subsequently (although not the fairly rare picture disc version). I saw them about the time of their fourth album - Air Cut which featured Eddie Jobson and Kirby. This one I think was the fifth album. I've also seen them two or three times in recent years - once with Daryl Way but each time with the still gorgeous Sonja Kristina.

Whoops! Their seventh album after Midnight Wire which I never got and the live album although I did have a cassette which I recorded off a Radio 1 In Concert which featured several songs from those albums.

What is the story about Herne Bay and Whitstable and record shops, Chappers?

Are they famous for record shops?

Would genuinely like to know.

I have only ever associated Whitstable with in-breeding (something someone who lives in Sittingbourne once told me)

I know exactly what you mean.
I have to listen to it again before I make my mind up...but this time with my eyes closed, the video is too bloody distracting.

A bit Another One Bites The Dust-ish.

It's well known that New Order started in 1980 because Joy Division etc etc... But not everyone fully appreciates how fearless, awesome and brave this move was. They turned their back on JD ONCE AND FOR ALL - put a DEFINITIVE full stop on JD... And this is the message that continues to inspire: Forget the past, even as important as JD. Look ahead, look on, NEVER look back. Hence:
First single JD covers 7", 12", rereleased 12", Record Day JD versions rerelease
Still JD compilation
Rereleased JD first Peel Session 12" 1, Peel session 2, comiled into Peel Sessions LP, rereleased LP in new cover, included in Complete BBC Sessions
Atmosphere 88, Substance 88
London reissues 93
93's 'NOSory' DVD, Radio 1 and MTV documentaries include JD
Love Will Tear Us Apart - 95, Permanent: Best of JD 95
Heart and Soul box set 97
Remastered Preston live, Bains Douches live, Fractured Box (Preston live and Bains Douches live), Re Fractured Box (including Preston live, Les Bains Douches live so Fractured Box)
CD remastered reissues
JD DVD interviews
Control OST
The Best Of 2008
Total: From JD to NO
+ / - singles box set
CD remastered reissues remastered on vinyl
NO played JD sporadically through the 80s and since 98 every gig has included at least three JD tracks (the Peel gig had nothing else).
Since 2009 Hook has toured JD all over the world and written his 'autobiography' only on JD...
It's a potent message: Look to the future guys. Never look back, and certainly don't make a millipenny out of it. RESPECT!

Remembered Mental Notes as being voted the best NZ album ever a while back, didn't realise it was 16 years ago...but it probably still stands: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=165010

The America album is far and away their best (and I've got 'em all), only track I don't love is 'Don't Cross the River' and that's okay. Always liked Dewey Bunnell's songs the best, 'Cornwall Blank' is probably my favourite of his songs and 'Ventura Highway' definitely my pick of their hits.

I just discovered them on my travels. Lots of unlikely towns seem to have interesting record shops. I just like the town for a relaxing break though.
