I think you are right rinds/scratchings except the latter has all the "bits" left on them (see above) and your link is about cooking bacon rinds, which is not the same thing as I remember..............No, it looks like I will never know what they were and be unable to taste them again as it seems to be a snack that has disappeared into the mists of time sadly. Damn!!
They were like short strips (1" to 2") of say streaky bacon that has been made to explode in a very high temperature oil.
