On The Buses Page 7

Yeah.

This comedy never gets old! Overall, the films are the best in my opinion!

Agree Greg.Films were fantastic.

I love this show. Got most of the DVDs and have seen all but 3 episodes.

My brother smoked joints with Olive from On The Buses when they used to work at the same place.

Amazing how those two blokes get all the young totty!

I just read the BSG review which said that the jokes are 'noticeably dated' and 'aren't funny anymore'

Hmmm . . could this not be said of almost every 50/60/70s sitcom?

I'm a huge Hancock fan (in both senses of the word thanks to Stella!) and 61 years old so what would my daughters who are 18 and 17 think of 'Sunday afternoon at home'?

They just would not understand it.

Likewise something like 'All Gas and Gaiters'.

These programmes were set in a world 40 or 50 years ago and given the pace of change even in the last 20 years it's hardly surprising that they seem a bit outdated.

Having just finished watching every episode of Dad's Army, I'm now starting on OTB.

It does show though what a stroke of genius Dad's Army was because it still seems as fresh today as ever in my opinion.

I HATE these people who regard 70s humour as "dated". On The Buses was one of the greatest sitcoms ever. Beats today's smut-ridden, so-called "comedy" shows by a mile.

Fans of On The Buses might be intrested to know that I am taking part in a show all about Reg Varney's early years called Before The Buses in Budleigh where he lived for the last 20 years of his life. His daughter Jeanne has put together the material and will be attending.

All profits to the British Heart Foundation, Children's Hospice South West and Fairlynch Museum and Arts Centre.

The early years of Budleigh Salterton's own Reg Varney. Famed for On The Buses and The Rag Trade. Great songs, glimpses of London's East End and Budleigh in the '30s, stories from Reg's early struggles.

Will that include the Valiant Varneys? One of my favourite programmes when I was a kid.

Sadly not although I will ask his daughter about that one as it's not a series I knew about. It's more his very early days starting off playing the piano in working mans clubs.

Here's a newspaper story all about it featuring a small interview with me http://www.exeterexpressandecho.co.uk/ll-play-Butler-Exeter-actor-chronicle-comic-Reg-s/story-29348796-detail/story.html

Ok so OTB wasn't Shakespeare but the fact that the show still features on ITV3 on a daily basis shows it is still popular. Apparently the show still runs in Australia too. It's of its time, and nostalgia viewing for many. It probably wouldn't get commissioned today but 7 series and 3 movies? It deserves its place in British sitcom history.

I'm a bit too young to have seen the TV series, but have seen the movies. These and others from that era (Bless This House, Love Thy Neighbour, Man About The House, and the "present day" Carry Ons) all have a quality that makes them seem like the are from a bygone age. While they are all as cheap as chips, each of them has occasional laugh out loud moments. The decorating shenanigans and darts match of Holiday on the Buses are fantastic.

Absolutely loved the films very nostalgic.
