RIP Jimmy Hill

RIP

Indeed RIP. A man who did much for players and for me made Match of the Day his own in its golden years. Remember the laugh we all had when they got he and Bruce together for a meeting of chins.

87, good age.

RIP too.

Viz was obsessed with him.

Sad to see him go. Like me, you probably remember him on "The Big Match" before that, with the legendary Brian Moore. As a kid, I far preferred "The Big Match" to MOTD - scheduling it on Sunday afternoon helped too.

Vaguely remember that, but then didn't Brian go on to front the ITV prog.?

My other memory of Jimmy, ever the gentleman, not rising to the crap that spouted out that arse Alan Hansen who would always bait him when they were on together. What a f**king wanker Hansen was.

Don't beat about the bush Herc - start telling it like it is.

RIP Jimmy

Brian presented "The Big Match" on ITV/LWT, and Jimmy provided expert analysis.

:) Sorry to use Jimmy's obit. for a rant, but that tosser Hansen used to get on my nerves and I didn't like the way he disrespected the late great Jimmy Hill.

The answer to that could be that Jimmy Hill was universally loathed in Scotland - I think because of his prejudice but I'm not into football, though he did give me the creeps.

:O Loathed in Scotland?! Cannot recall him saying/doing anything untoward your beautiful country.

I think toss-pot Hansen was just a miserable know-it-all git and begrudged Jimmy his popularity and knowledge of football that the wanker didn't have as he bluffed his way through supposed punditry.

Player - Captain - Manager - Club Chairman - PFA Chairman - Commentator - Big Match Presenter - MOTD Presenter - Bruce Forsyth's Stunt Double.

What more could you ask?

Here's a classic Jimmy Hill clip - any football footage is purely incidental.*

Watch from 02.24

:D

*yeah right

Yeah, definitely purely incidental that it features a Palace player winning Goal Of The Season. ;)

I actually remember most of those goals. Lovely to see that footage again. The Bowles one was Vardeyesque, and the Rogers one, Mahrezesque. :D

Jimmy missed out the most important factor in his explanation - Rogers deserved about 100 bonus points for the state of your pitch!

Yes - R.I.P Jimmy. He changed the face of football as he was one of the leading lights to abolish the maximum wage.

Also he managed my team Sutton United for a while - as did Malcolm Alison and Dario Gradi.

I did wonder if they'd have a minute's silence today but it may have been too short notice.

As I say, I know bugger all about football but I can assure you he was loathed.

As is every other Englishman, it's a problem the Scots have, not Jimmy Hill's. He suited the age he was in, he'd be too dry for TV now and his appearance and manner made him the butt of jokes but the analysis he pioneered was one of TV football's greatest legacies, look how much airtime Sky spend on it.

His achievements would be much better appreciated if he hadn't become a TV celebrity but I still find it surprising he wasn't knighted for all his innovations in football. I think like Bobby Moore he's one we woefully under appreciated when he was alive.

"As is every other Englishman, it's a problem the Scots have"

Ah yes, I think you have nailed it there Alfred - isn't that a shame, and yet I have always thought it odd how we devote so much time to Scottish football in the media here in England.
