It's primitive instinctive survival-of-the-fittest behaviour, harking back to when being able to run was better for survival than being able to think (the modern requirement).
Hopefully they will grow out of it.

Genuinely very sorry to hear what happened.
In terms of the general public, these are fortunately isolated incidents.
Unlike in the case of politicians who one caller to a phone in show yesterday accurately described as all being violent criminals.
