I've just twigged - Bernie/St Bernard.
Bernie Winters had the most valuable gift a comedian can have: he was likeable.
That's not to say everyone on Earth liked him, but millions did and that gives an otherwise-not-overly-talented comedian a massive advantage when it comes to getting ahead in the business.
