So entry is free is it?

You think they would have mentioned it, but no.

£25 is not bad, though.
it's a pretty good group of judges...

Who can freely nick your ideas. Why else would so many prod cos and pro writers be in on it?

These things are a jamboree for competing prods and prod cos and unscrupulous writer judges. Some may say a scam, or certainly have said about the proliferation of US screenwriting comps.

There is no promise of production or commission or even an option in the prizes. So I am sceptical.

We are also giving away £9000+ in cash and prizes

£3,500 cash, which you'll recoup from the first 140 entries. The other prizes are promotions any company does with new products.

Looking at that list of judges I think it would be worth a punt. Surely worth a chance to get your work read by that group of people?

And seems rather a lot of hassle for Jeremy Irons et al to go to for a few script ideas.

Really?
You might want to take the tin-foil hat off for a moment.
You'd spend £25 in stamps and phone-calls just to get any one of those judges to have a read.
And the world is not short of ideas - it's short of good writers.
If any of those guys see anything they like, threy'll be on the phone trying to strike a (cheap) deal.

It would be nice if Shore Scripts posted a response but I suspect they have been scared off.

Scared or not, we are their clients!

Judging by the cut off title of this thread (NOW O) I'm guessing Shore Scripts might have used spam software to automatically add this message to 1000s of forums and contact forms throughout the interwebby.

Great response on this thread.

Sorry it's taken a while to answer you guys.

Basically, any screenwriting competition worth its salt is going to ask for an entry fee. It takes a lot of time to organize and operate so kudos to anyone who can read hundreds of screenplays at no cost but it's just not financially realistic. Yup, we want to make a profit. We're a business. The film industry is a business primarily focused on making money. But hopefully we can help aspiring screenwriters produce some quality work at the same time. We're trying to help find quality writers because quality sells. It's a difficult business to get into. We're not guaranteeing a script will go into production (which takes years by the way) we're helping you get noticed and giving you exposure.

Production companies won't steal your idea. This is something a lot of amateur writers seem to have strong belief in but no one actually does this. It's easier to option a script than it is to fight a lengthy legal battle, any day.

You've got to have a winning script, of course. And if you've got a fantastic idea, your script will find its way into the right hands no matter what avenue you take it down as long as it's not just sitting on your hard drive that is.

Regards,
The Shore Team
