Heard a new record on the radio today and thought that sounds quite good. Astounded to learn it was Will Young.

They could be on my shopping list too.

I've just heard it too and wouldn't have guessed it was Will Young in a million years. Very Motown.

Saw the documentary of Jeff Lynne last night followed by the ELO concert in Hyde Park. I was never a huge fan of ELO and later felt Lynne was rightly berated for his overly commercial production style on a range of records. Now it all sounds accomplished and fresh. In musical terms it's actually attractive. I guess that is what can happen when there have been so many years of dross in the singles chart.

I really, really hate the drum sound on the records produced by him. He ruined albums and songs by cool artists such as Tom Petty or even the Beatles ("Free As A Bird") with this boring, powerless sound.

Well, this is the standard line of criticism isn't it and I can understand it. But - and a little controversy is never a huge problem - Mr Blue Sky v Bohemian Rhapsody. Discuss. Oddly, I am voting blue here.

I used to love ELO up to Out of the Blue. This probably coincided with the emergence of Punk. I like On the Third Day and New World Record. . Also of course the first album which was more Roy Wood's baby.

Yes it all changed with punk.

I hadn't realised that he was working class.

Well, I probably knew but it hadn't sunk in.

I don't think I heard ELO in that way.

He was previously a member of the Idle Race (before he joined the Move).

I love this

Think that is on an old cassette of British psychedelia a pal did for me some time ago.

I will see if I can find one of the sources on the net. In fact, it could have been this one:

Interesting compilation. I see it also features pre-Brinsley schwartz and the Rumour Kippington Lodge.

Done! Lots of b-sides and alternate versions on the second discs. I'd have preferred full concerts from the respective periods but maybe there weren't any available in good sound quality.

I saw what I believe was their first gig supporting the Who at an open air concert at Charlton Athletic's Valley stadium.
