Being really horrible may not necessarily be the best route of action for achieving all these aims?
But rehabilitation doesn't work in most cases. How about banishment? We drop them off in Sudan, sort of like a reverse asylum seeker? Mind you we'd have to brand their faces to stop them sneaking back again.
Would rehabilitation work if the prisons were more severe? I really don't know. My suggestion would be don't let any of the scummy horrible chavvy parents have kids, then we wouldn't have criminals in this world 
Well it worked for Sweden. Harsh prisons probably not. Random cruelty doesn't work, but take away TV, and all stimulus other than compulsory education, here's a novel idea.

Yes there are numerous goals/aims/purposes to prison, but my basic point is that they're far too nice in their present form! Considering the backgrounds that most of the prison population come from (notably the percentage of drug addicts), I don't think that it is an exaggeration to say that many (most?) people have a better life inside than out. Free food and drink, shelter, warmth, people to talk to, medical treatment, exercise, learning programmes, etc. Whilst there's a place for all that rehabilitation malarkey in some cases, doesn't it strike you as just being too nice? :-/

Also very true. Look at the statistics for violent offences. Most are carried out by people who've already spent time inside, and increasingly people who've been released only days beforehand! What a ridiculous situation we've got ourselves into.
Maybe they should be forced to watch In The Night Garden, no one can be bad after watching that show. It's lovely.
