Get the score (501) to zero, but don't have to use the three darts at that final point - hope that's clear. 
But that final clearance has to be with a double - so say you have 10 left, you have to get the double 5 to finish.
Have you never played darts?
I have played a few times, but it's quite likely we weren't even using proper rules.

There are plenty of games you can play on a darts board apart from the regular one - Cricket. Killer etc.
