Favourite Guitar Solo Page 2

Bloody hell, I'll bet he can still kill with his guitar though.

specializing in missile technology.

It's hardly rocket science though is it...... oh wait

Anything by The Ramones.

Hendrix on the Live At Fillmore East version of Stone Free.

Not sure but I do like the extraordinary guitar work on "Marquee Moon" by Television. "Fools Gold" by the Stone Roses and "Oh Larsen B" by British Sea Power are also very memorable. Sometimes introductions stand out - "Ventura Highway" (America), "Whiskey in the Jar" (Thin Lizzy), William It Was Really Nothing (The Smiths), Oblivious (Aztec Camera) and "Streets of Your Town" (Go Betweens) are all songs that immediately spring to mind. And the juxtaposition of guitar with quieter moments can be exhilarating as in the case of "I'm Mandy Fly Me" by 10CC. I don't think the electric guitar should ever be mentioned without reference to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and, say, "Didn't It Rain". I'd also want to mention the very uplifing Zimbabwean bands, the Bhundu Boys and the Four Brothers. Even with this list, there is a feeling that I could come up with another that is its equal and probably more reflective of my tastes. But these are the ones my mind went to as an immediate reaction to the question and focussing on the more commercial.

Of all the recordings in the 2000s, the guitar towards the end of this track is very underrated in my opinion. It may not be the most outstanding musicianship of all time but it always struck me as extremely evocative.

Carlos Santana/Mahavishnu John McLaughlin - The Life Divine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmM2qXDS9wc

Dave Gilmore on Another Brick in The Wall, part 2.

Too many Hendrix solos to choose from.

And many others.

Never Ever tire of Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock in 1969.

Blows me away every time I listen to it - forget the tune, he is telling you through his guitar just what is in his head at the time.

Literally mind blowing.

Not a great rock song but the first one that came to mind was Goodbye to love by the Carpenters.

Only discovered their 1990 classic album Spiderland a few weeks ago, thanks to Gordon's RYM forums:

The song builds up to a short, incredibly simple guitar burst and solo that sent shivers down my spine the first time I heard it.

Yup, great guitar solo, and in a similar vein/style which I think just eclipses it is the one on The Isley Brothers - Who's That lady

So every Christmas when grandad (me) has had a belly full of beer, he gets his guitar out and plays in the back room for his grandchildren.

They don't like it. In the following video that my daughter sneakily recorded you can clearly hear my granddaughter say 'I don't like it'

Ladies and gentlemen, I present for your displeasure - a short excerpt of Apache by the Shadows played by me on guitar. (don't worry it's only about 30 seconds long)

:D

Love many a solo from over the years, but Steve Rothery's solo on 'Easter' has got to be my favourite, gets me every time and conveniently begins this compilation of Rothery solos from a single weekend:

Yeah, like you do with all things Zappa. ;)

Steve, I couldn't watch this clip from this computer here (God knows why not) but I'll watch it at home. You (and your granddaughter's reaction) certainly made me curious about your abilities as a guitar God. I expect something between Dave Gilmour and Dave Lister.
