Roasts

Just been watching the Joan Rivers roast

I have very mixed feelings about these roasts, but mostly I think it's a terrible, terrible thing. You get the odd funny bit but it's horrendous to either be a roastee or to join in and be a roaster. And I completely disagree with the whole concept of trying to be funny by belittling or himiliating someone.

Surely Joan was Hermiliated.

Anyway I can't belive she took offence.

The one I feel sorry for was Roger the Alien.

I posted this half way through the show, I think in the end, she nailed it. She's so funny.

Was Roger the guy who doesn't open his eyes when he's laughing? He's a cool dude, it's like he submits so much that he can't even bare to face how funny everything is!

Don't mind them - bit o' fun

I do like the Dean Martin hosted roasts of the 70's.

A gentleman by the name of Foster Brooks comes to mind, who gives a particularly entertaining insight into the private life of a little known up and coming lad by the name of Sammy Davis jnr.

I don't think it's humiliating. The idea with a roast is that you can take the piss and accept it in return. I doubt people would sign up for a roast if it wasn't intended to be good fun or if they weren't secure enough to take it in good stride, and in my experience Comedians usually are some of the most comfortable people. Look at Phyllis Diller, or a more recent example Miranda Hart and her weight jokes about herself. Some jokes in roasts can be cruel, and I think it says something about the roaster if their joke is in taste or not.

agreed - I just don't like it when they go too far. There is a fine line between humour and cruelty. I also object to people being cruel to someone else in an attempt to further their careers or make themselves look good.

They know what they're letting themselves in for so they deserve all they get. No sympathy whatsoever.

What's up son? do you not love your new Dad?
