Happy Birthday Elvis

Mr Costello that is.

60 today. One of our greatest singer/songwriters.

Of his recent albums I like the collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Wise Up Ghost with the Roots.

My favourite albums are Imperial Bedroom and Trust but I've got most of them and need to dig out some to listen to.

(Shit! One day late! OK - yesterday!)

There were three copies of "Imperial Bedroom" in our student house and only four living there. I bought two of them by mistake. "Man Out of Time" and "Beyond Belief" can still take me back there - just the sound brings in a lot of old feelings - but it is the earlier "Alison" which is my main one and for very many reasons.

It probably says something of our outlooks at the time that initially I just didn't get all the recent fuss over the "N" word in "Oliver's Army". Having sung it with others on pub nights out and on seeing him live, as well as it being in my collection, I had always heard it as "ligger". It is probably the case that I skewed words of other songs without realising it for the sake of what? I dunno......harmony, possibly, or a comfortable life.

I never noticed that word in there either. Probably because it never occurred to me that someone would want to use it in a song post 1940.

Anyway, I do like a bit of Elvis Costello.

Ah but that was "White n*****r" so surely that's acceptable.

Yes to the last two contributions.

I just think there could be sensitivities around it even then - it wasn't the sort of thing that was discussed for days on forums : either you felt it or you didn't - and it had been there clearly on the cover of Lennon's "Shaved Fish". "Woman is the N of the World". Plus also there was many a W in Stiff Little Fingers' "White Noise". The other side of it was that it was a subtle reverse of general use so ok with intelligence applied.

I always link the latter with a speech in The Commitments. The bit where they say that the Irish are the black people of the world, Dubliners are the black people of Ireland and their part of Dublin is the black Dublin. Something on those lines. That's done in a plus and a minus way. As for my Oliver, not conscious.

Anyhow, Happy Birthday Declan. :)

Hmmm. Maybe I should edit it. Don't want to get loads of hatemail.

Sorry. I wasn't intending to take it heavily in that direction.

I like Bacharach but have never got my head around his collaboration with EC.

If there is a track that could be recommended, I'd appreciate it.

Same here. Probably one of my top male singers actually.

Just worried in case any nutters Google the 'N' word.

That's very nice, he's like the Woody Allen of songs!

His voice is strangely a bit sexy.

I have one of his albums somewhere but I've no idea which it is. Actually, knowing me it's probably some slightly lame compilation album.

Have just impulse bought the Painted From Memory CD, thanks be to Chappers :)

Yes, I understand. That's a very good clip. Thanks for it.

Happy birthday, Elvis!
You're an arrogant arse spitting at the world from your ivory tower. But boy, you have more talent in your little finger than all the Robbie Williams and Justin Timberlakes of the world in their whole bodies. So please go on and follow your muse.

How is he an arrogant arse Gordon?
