I've never thought of the word Hi as being American or modern in any way.

Maybe it's not but I still - like Keewick - say Hello instead in texts, emails, postcards everything.

Do you say bye? Or is it always good morrow?
;)

GOODbye

Do you always shout the good bit.

YES!!!

Laughing out loud

"Good Evening Squire!" for men.
"Good Morrow Fair Lady!" for women.

That's my secret thought with some folk. Laughing out loud

It's all cool.

Cool

Not that this pisses me off, but in a similar vein, why is it considered the norm to sign off emails with variants of "Regards"? i.e. Best/Kindest/Sincere etc.

Does it?

Or does it come from a warplane Heads-up display whereby critical flight info is reflected off the windscreen so that you can read it without taking your eyes off the target.

No. It's much more likely that Head-up display comes from the expression 'heads up' which is much earlier. If I have time today I'll look it up.

These sayings are usually much older than you'd think - for example the expression 'Call Girl' for prostitute dates from the 1600s and refers literally to a girl who comes over to you when you call her. It's nothing to do with a phone escort.
