Admittiing a mistake in the light of evidence is apparently cynical hypocrisy. There is doubtless more than an element of calculation, but this reaction tells you a lot about why politicians persist with policies that are blatantly not working. With our yah boo politics and hysterical press electoral credibility depends on brazening it out, while opponents can be trusted never to let the national interest get in the way of the more important business of political point scoring.
