My first stand-up gig

So this was my first ever stand-up gig at The Comedy Store in Manchester during King Gong and I'd love to get some feedback, criticism and advice if you have any to offer!

Here's the video:

Thanks very much!

interesting, ok first of all you're very nervous comes over. But you've obviously done your homework, lots of well prepared jokes, economic and neatly told with good timing.
The audience obviously love you, I've never seen a friendlier gong audience.
I think at some point you're going to need more story and character. But for a first gig I thought it was impressive.

Thanks, yeah the audience were lovely. I know it's clear I was very nervous, I'm hoping this is something I can learn to control as I get more experience and become more comfortable on stage. I guess the multiple factors of it being my first gig, a gong show and the audience being quite big just got to me a little. I probably shouldn't have started with a gong show but it was the first gig I could get!

heh good for you, for a first gig it was very good, confidence will come with time and sooner than you think.

Cool, thanks very much for your feedback and tips, I really appreciate it.

There's some real solid jokes in there! I really really liked the 'antiques dealer(stealer)' and the Connor sir jokes. Can imagine Milton Jones doing jokes like that. Pretty solid set to be honest. The delivery is a little bit hesitant which can get in the way of the jokes a bit. If you can train your self to say something other than 'erm' in between jokes it would help just because erm can make you look a bit more unsure, even though it was clear you knew all your jokes. I can't really talk, because I probably wouldn't be able to remember that set to be able to say it, but I guess the more you say the jokes out loud the less you will trip over the delivery. But yeah, good work.

Thanks, Milton Jones is a hero of mine so I'm thrilled that you would say that. I think the erming was mainly due to nerves and I'm hoping doing more gigs and building up my confidence will help that to subside as I become more focused and comfortable on stage.

Cheers!

Very impressed young man. We'll crafted, well delivered funny jokes. My only observation is that the pauses while you waited for the laughs to die off we're sometimes a bit long.

Welcome to the site Wave

Thanks very much. I'd read that it's important not to try and talk over the laughs and wait for them to pass so I was probably just being a bit too careful with that and I'm hoping to get a better feel for when and when not to start talking as I progress. Thanks a lot for your wonderful feedback.

Yeah, good work. Hats off for having the balls to do it regardless of nerves. It seemed to me that your nervousness/geekyness was part of your charm. You got a big laugh at the beginning just because you said you went to a club. which I'm not sure was intentional ?? So maybe that is something you can play around with a kind of really nervous nerdy persona. Just a thought.. bear in mind I've no idea what I'm talking about. Well, done though, got a few laughs out of me.

Very well done, especially for a 1st gig, however I would say that Manchester Gong audiences are clearly nicer than London ones, it took you 30 seconds to get your first joke out, if you'd done that at the London store you'd have been gonged off before you'd even started.

Not going to give you too much feedback as you need stagetime to learn from your mistakes and experiences, put up a clip of your 100th gig and I'll happily critique your performance.

Are you the Tony Cowards who does jokes on Twitter? I really enjoy the stuff you do if you are, your puns are right up my street. Yeah, the audience were lovely on the night I was there. I'm not sure if it's usually like that but it was far less brutal than I was expecting it to be.

Hi Lomas, yes, that's me. :)

You've got some lovely gags, keep gigging and your performance will start to catch up with your writing.

Thanks very much, it's great to talk to you!

Definitely. I thought it was a strong first showing.
