Jackanory-style World Cup short

Hi all,

We're making a series of World Cup-themed Jackanory-style illustrated/animated short stories. Here's the first one - Ladies' Night in the England Camp - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQOhdXAQHR8&list=UUzZF3KfIOhjZyjQTpIG9bVw.

We want to improve the A/V quality on the next few - we've got a shotgun mic on the cam but it always sounds tinny - any tips?

All feedback welcome.

Thanks

quite like it .. nicely done

Hi Rupert. Thanks, glad you liked it.

We've made another in the series since and decided to change tack slightly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocz71I5lGBE&list=UUzZF3KfIOhjZyjQTpIG9bVw

It made it easier to put together and, hopefully, better.

Zoom mike Zn4 or some such.

Thanks Marc, will check out Zoom. (We'd been using a Rode VideoMic which has been a little disappointing, even taking into account its price.)

Really liked this. Good mix of ridiculousness and surreal current relevance.
Had a few little laugh out loud moments. From an audio point of view, not an exeprt, although I do work in audio visual. It sounds like the 'tinny' effect you are detecting is partly due to pick up of reverberance from the room. So the mic is picking up the echoes from the smooth surfaces in the room which will naturally sound different from the audio direct from the source. I wouldn't rush to blame the type of mic you are using, rather, look at teh acoustics of the set up. I know you said the mic is mounted to the camera, which is also facing the back wall so also picking up a lot of secondary sound, perhaps. If you think about how a studio is set up, they would have the boom above the heads of hte person speaking(just out of shot) and pointed in the direction of the people speaking. Maybe if you mount your shotgun on a mic stand via an XLR to a mixer then into the cam, the angle pointing downwards towards the floor is less likely to pick up the reverb from the back wall because the floor rarely creates that kind of reverb unless you have marble flooring. You can have the best mics in the world but if you are a in a 'live' sounding room ( as in, if you clap and you can hear the reverb with your ears) then the direction in which you point the mic becomes strategic.

Know what you mean I have both the Zoom will set you back more!

danphobic - Really glad you liked it and that it made you laugh out loud a couple of times.

Thanks for your reply. That's really helpful info and advice. We didn't mess around with the mic positioning and didn't really give much thought to the properties of the room. I will have a play around. I imagine some heavy curtains would take the sting out of the echoes so we might try filming in front of those in future and/or go with your suggestions.

Rupert - Cheers! haha, yeah we're definitely not impressionists so the accent was a bit stylised.

Marc - Hopefully with danphobic's suggestions we can get some better results out of the Rode. Will keep an eye on the price of the Zooms though.
