Clearly that you aren't skilled enough at pretending to be listening. I try to nod and smile, whilst I reply something like "Weirdest Weapons of World War 2" in my head. I find that visualising something like the Third Reich's jet prototypes really helps me appear fascinated by the extended details of someone's friends' relationship with someone else I don't care about.
Also useful when some dude is going on and on about his new computer.
