Bad characters in great films

I'll go first: Catherine Zeta-Jones' character (and performance) in 'The Terminal'.

Horst Buchholz's Chico was quite annoying in The Magnificent Seven.

Newt (the little girl) in Aliens.

Scott (Dr. Evil's son) in the Austin Powers films.

Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings.

Is it raining? I hadn't noticed. Gaaahh.

Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings.

Who would you have preferred?

Geena Davis would have been a good bet.

MacDowell is beautiful but has absolutely no charisma.

It is not credible that Hugh Grant's character would have preferred her to Kristen Scott Thomas.

Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Classic non-PC piece of casting!

Fred Astaire in Towering Inferno

Steven Seagal in anything.

A few friends of mine thought Joey Lauren Adams wrecked Chasing Amy, but I always thought her squeaky, kookiness fitted that kind of off-beat movie. I'd be in no hurry to see her in much else though.

Tend to unconvinced by pretty boys in hard-man roles. Never believed Di Caprio in Gangs of New York (although he is great in more clean-cut, young upstart roles like in Catch Me if You Can).

Ditto Jude Law in Road to Perdition and Enemy at the Gates. Strange casting.

I don't think she ruins Chasing Amy. There are a lot of weird/off performances in old Kevin Smith films, but they all still totally work. It's part of their charm!

I was about to say you have to watch her in Empire Records. But it turns out that was a very young Renee Zellweger. D'oh. They are pretty much twins though so watch it anyway. ;)

Simon Pegg in the Star Trek movies. He was crowbarred in for the fanboys but every time he was on screen he took me further out of the movie and I was only just barely hanging on to begin with.

Hayden Christiansen in Return of the Jedi.

On the DVD I have, extra pointless, irritating effects were added. At the end when Luke sees the ghosts of Yoda, Obi Wan and Anniken, they replaced the guy who played Anniken earlier in ROTJ with the new Anniken from the new films. I really don't want to be reminded of the new films existence when I'm watching the proper Star Wars films.

George Lucas really is a dick.

A bit harsh!

Although I'm glad he's got sod all to do with ep 7

I think we're slightly diverging on this topic, we're mainly pointing out bad actors and not bad characters.

Sometimes the two collide - Jar Jar Binks, but other times, you think that the character was well written but the actor was not up to the job - Mike in the Young Ones.
